A couple days ago I bought a 9 foot spinning rod combo deal from Walmart. It was pre-spooled with 17 pound test line. I'd hoped to be able to cast my lures much farther across the pond with the new rig, but it didn't happen. I only reached about the same distance as my regular rods. I figure the heavier line plus the light lure weight was the cause. I guess I need to buy heavier baits! 😂
Line weight (strength) has nothing to do with it. However, the diameter of the line plays a huge role in the amount of friction (reel and guides) generated during the cast.

Casting distance is 75% technique, 20% rod and 5% the reel.
Will not get into technique, but two things are true......
1. The longer the rod, the more strength required to cast the rod.
2. The rod "throws" the weight, not the angler. Throwing "harder" doesn't translate into distance if the rod is over or under loaded during the cast.

What the specification on the rod tells you:
Line Weight is actually a measure of strength. A rod rated for #8-17 should be able to dead lift #17. The rating assumes the line breaks before the rod

Lure Weight is the min and max weight required to properly “load” the rod for casting. Casting performance drops off sharply as you approach the limits of the rated range.

Note: There is no industry standard for lure weight. Manufacturers typically under/over rate lure weights for marketing purposes. In reality, rods typically have a very narrow "effective" weight range. A rod rated to cast 1-5 oz. is a joke

The Action is one of the most over looked aspects. Generally speaking, a fast action rod will outcast a slow to moderate action rod of the same length. On the other hand, fast action rods require more strength to fight a fish due to the increased leverage (min. bend). As such, the mod-fast rods are a popular conpromise between casting and fish fighting ability

I like a lot of action in a rod and I use it like a whip when casting and it’s always work well for me. I never put much thought into weight as far as casting goes but more for the water column I’m trying to reach. Now I want to go fishing 😂

I am excited for the hard water season Minnesota changed the rules on tip ups. It is now legal to have an automatic hook setting tip up and they moved the distance you allowed to be from the tip up to 200'. My home is exactly 50' off the water that gives me 150' out into the lake that will get me to 20' of water. I can put 4 tip ups out when my wife is home. Sit on the couch by the fireplace and watch football while I fish. I don't need wheels on my fish house.

When it is below 0 and the ice is 30" thick, it is not fishing, it is ice drinking.
Dunno if its a "grass is greener" thing but Id like to try that.....ice fishing . Not just the fish but it seems still and quiet compared to most other fishing , ....I bet there have been some wild plans and ideas hatched whilst ice fishing :D

Sitting still in the cold never did much for me but it was better than just sitting in the house unless the wind was blowing. I never had a hut and don’t think I ever caught anything either. I was thankful for the gas powered ice auger with extension. Almost didn’t cut through a couple of times.

Oh there are deluxe fish houses you can buy on wheels it drops down to the ice and you fish. Fully enclosed with kitchens comfortable furniture bathrooms people come and spend the weekend on the lake watching Netflix and fishing. Google Ice Castle. It is an RV made to pull out on a lake and fish thru holes in the floor.

It is sad what ice fishing has become, there used to be great times and deep conversations. People now sit at stare at a $1200 screen with split screen you can see your lure on the screen you see the exact depth the the fish are at and you drop your jig right in their face. You can also deploy the underwater camera if you want to watch the fish bite on another screen. You use a different transducer for ice fishing.

I was thinking more moving bout until you found the right bottom structure .
There are so many ways you can look at this , but for me I just like to know there is actually something there to be caught , after that I still gotta do my bit , and parking up over the right type of bottom structure to target a particular species ,gurnard like sandy valleys and cod like rocks and weeds , buy yeah some peeps go all out , Im not so sure they arn't unwittingly spoiling it for themselves
