Noticed this Starcraft at my local boat repair today

I was at my local boat repair place today to see about some follow-up work that I need. They just recently replaced the bellows, etc., on my 1987 Cobra. They also replaced the shifter cable and I don't think they got it adjusted correctly.

Anyway, the owner wasn't in at the moment so I was looking around his shop. I saw this little Starcraft underneath a bunch of empty cardboard boxes. It looked to be in EXCELLENT condition and has a 35HP Chrysler o/b on it. In general, this is probably not a very interesting find (my apologies to Starcraft junkies - :D ) but check out the registration.

What's so special about that old registration?(I must be missing something)

To me a better photo of the actual boat would be more interesting:)

Looks like a nice Jet, Jupiter, or Nassau. Very cool.

I think what's special is that it doesn't look like it's been registered, so maybe not in the water, since 1975 . . . ;)

I agree, maybe even another Nova based on the sleek windshield? Nice color scheme, haven't seen one like that that I remember in any of the brochures.

Thanks QC...I am a little slow sometimes.:D

That's what I thought originally and went and looked up those two Nova threads. Thing is, the Novas don't appear to be lapstrake. So I'm not sure.

that's called "mothballed." A good find. Toss the Chrysler, though, first time it gives you trouble

Re: Noticed this Starcraft at my local boat repair today

Just a little more info -

I couldn't get too close to it so it was a little hard to tell the overall condition, but the part of the hull that I could see did not have a single scratch or dent on it. It looked like if you pulled it out and washed it that it would look like a MUCH newer boat. The part you see is about the only part I could see because it was covered with, and loaded with boxes of all sorts of "stuff". I could only get to the stern far enough to see that the motor was 35HP Chrysler, and that there was about 6" of dust sitting on the top of the motor cover. I could not see anything inside except a small portion of the dash which looked like a good cleaning and it would be fine.

I could also see one of the steering cables in the aft port corner. I say cable but it looked more like rope clothesline, and a spring that looked like it was supposed to keep the cable/rope taught. The spring wasn't doing it's job very well because the cable/rope was very loose.

While I was waiting I talked to one of the employees that has been there a very long time. He said that a long time ago they had it running, but they burned up the water pump. They replaced the powerhead (he actually said they put a new powerhead on it), ran it once or twice to make sure it was working properly, and it has been parked ever since.

I have to go back there tomorrow so I will ask more info about it. Maybe he'll let me "haul it away" for him. :p

Re: Noticed this Starcraft at my local boat repair today

I found out a little more about the boat. The owner bought it for his sons long ago. The reason they had to rebuild the power head is because his boys wanted to see if the motor actually ran before going fishing one day, so they started it in the garage with no water and, of course, burned it up. Sheez. Kids! So he had the powerhead rebuilt by a friend, and of course by then the boys had lost interest so it has been sitting for that long.

I asked if the 1975 registration was really the last time it was registered and the owner said something like "Oh, no! . . . uh . . .maybe . . . uh, well . . . yeah, probably." I guess age is catching up with him too. He also said that someone is coming to look at it and he wants to get $2000 for it.

Anyway, that's it.

The boat has sat collecting dust for 35 years and ironically JUST when you are showing some interest, the guy has a buyer coming by tomorrow to look at it.

That is QUITE a coincidence. I would think if I were sitting on something for 35 years and it hasn't moved, if I had someone coming buy to look at it, I'd probably try to dig the thing out and hit it with a hose and brush, wouldn't you?

EVERY used boat I've ever looked at seems to be waiting for someone to come by and look at it later that day or tomorrow (or possible the following weekend). Every single one.

Don't think I didn't think that too, but I have been going to this guy for a long time and I think he is honest. I can't really believe that I didn't see that StarCraft years ago, but I didn't. He also knew that I was not interested in buying it when he told me that.

Something seems to have motivated him recently because he was telling me that he is undergoing a project to clean up his shop which he is sharing with a friend of his who builds some sort of race cars. The total shop space is probably large enough that he could house 8 boats in there while working on them, but with all of his "salvaged" parts, and sharing half of the space, he has to work on customers boats outside.

I think I remember him saying that he was going to get the entire shop space back, but I could be mistaken about that. He also said that this winter, or at least the near future, he was finally going to get rid of about 8 or 10 salvage boats he has along the side of the shop.

All of this makes it sound like the guy forgot to put his plug in, but he and his employees do good work at reasonable prices, get the job done in a reasonable time, and will back up their work. What more can you ask for?
