Is it common practice to keep your motors running while offshore ?

I guess the thought that it is easier to have them running than to try, and start them. I was wondering what most do - I guess if you had an old single it would make since. I know newer motors are real dependable.

FWIW: I have an old single (1997) and it still doesn't make sense.

A motor not starting is a symptom of a bigger problem. If I had any doubt that the motor wouldn't start I wouldn’t leave the dock. The problem would have to be fixed, not go away, before I went anywhere.

Maybe to maintain position or troll over or around a fishing structure, rather than anchoring?

around here we go 20-30 miles out to sea no land in sight... not up or down the coast.....around here most keep their motors running while fishing....for cod and haddock.....tuna fishing for the day most anchor and shut off the motor.. engine.....Tuna fishing on Georges Bank motors stay running and they do not anchor.....if you watch "Wicked Tuna" and they R not anchored they R not fishing on Georges Bank...Georges is a dangeous place to fish weather wise.

I always shutdown when motoring is not needed. The diesel stinks......and the gas doesn't like it. I do alot of trolling for big gamefish, so a shutdown is not possible.

2 things are my goal. Leave the dock with a clean, quiet boat. Return with a dirty, bloody boat....and a loud one!

around here we go 20-30 miles out to sea no land in sight... not up or down the coast......

I didn?t realize you had them so close in up there. I would be tickled to only go out 20 miles.

For us, better count of 30-35 miles, 60 to the canyons with the exception of last winter. Last winter they were right on the beach for 5-6 weeks. Lots of them inside the 3 mile zone. Played havoc with the Striper fishing

Georges Bank is 150 miles to the shortest point from us....its at least a three to four day tuna fishing trip. We have bluefin tuna just outside our breakwater too sometimes.

Offshore fishing (30-80 miles out) for me I rarely shut down. I will troll for tuna and then when we hookup I go to live bait. If the bite is good and we stay drifting for a while I will shut down. We have no chance to anchor at night (too deep). I will shut down and run the generator to keep the batteries charged because I leave my lights and radar on while drifting.

if we're trolling offshore we leave them running, anchored up on a reef or wreck, shut them down.

I always shut them down. No sense in wasting fuel/money but I have talked to alot of people that keep them running.
