Oh No! Another new guy with a Mark 28A

Yep, that's me. I just joined this forum a yesterday. :) hi all

I bought this gem about five years ago mounted on an all original 1958 14-ft Fiberform runabout. All looks great and well matched, but now, after it has beeen sitting for a couple years, I let my nephew take it out and he evidently doesn't know to check the water pump (my fault for not checking). He ran it for about 15 minutes and when he came back, I noticed it was not pumping water. So,,,

Question 1. It was not hot, just warm to the touch and was still running very well, maybe ok?

Question 2. I found an impeller, gasket kit and instructions here: http://www.vintageoutboard.com/MImpellersLowerUnit/MERCImpeller_1.html
Can someone tell me if this is a good sight?

Seems like I'd be getting off real easy here for the whole shebang to only cost about $60.00. I have done mechanics all my adult life (I'm 60 now ) and do diesel mechanics on my 44-ft boat now. So, while I see by other posts here that working on this motor is going to be no picnic, I am not afraid to set it on a stand and start digging. And yes, I already have the colorful vocabulary to express the upcoming frustations.

Any advice on the vintage motors websight and final tips before I dig in will be most appreciated.

Thank you all.

Ummm, ok. I went ahead and ordered the referenced parts/instructions. They should arrive early next week. If the supplied instructions do not provide the needed help I will order the $70+ shop manual. I am sure it will all turn out ok.

Thanx

When you get the instructions or shop manual, I am afraid that they will list special tools for the job that are NLA, I have heard of people doing the job with out them but it's bad enough with them. To repair one for hire is a lose/lose deal so most marinas won't take the job in, with luck you might find a older serivice shop with the tools that will rent or lend them, we through our of the end of the dock over 20 years ago. Wish you all the luck in the world.

OK, I found the two tools I will need to do this, on eBay. Kinda spendy, but now that part is over and they should arrive any day. Got the impeller kit about 1.5 weeks ago. The weather is beautiful so if the tools show today, I should have this motor running by Monday morning. Will post pix and status if anyone wants.

Thanks for advice/help. :D :)eek:)

Long time no post. I got this little hummer all fixed up then had to go out of toqwn for awhile It runs like a champ. It is mounted on a 1958 14-foot Fiberform run-about. It planes up easily with me (225lb), a deckhand (175lb), a friend (200lb) and my 73lb Siberan Husky. Top speed with that load is only about 15-18 mph, but hey, it is only a 22hp motor. I am all enthused over it! With only me on board, it sizzles for a little guy.

Now I'm looking for a 40-hp Merc from the late 50s era.

Thanks all for the help and advice.
