Re: Old 18' starcraft what is she

I just noticed this today the tilt switch has a key switch on it. Any one ever seen one like this.

I had a pleasant suprise to day i had to clean the connections on a few thing but other than that it all works. That does not normally happen with a 44y/o anything.
86 those guages are standard Mercruiser 60's era stuff. I ended up with three sets of them. You can swap that key switch out with a newer one on the tilt panel. Tilt will work whether it's up or down with center being off. The outdrive has tilt only no trim. BTW, your outdrive setup is called MC Type 1A. You hear folks talking about Type 1ABC-the B & C are for the 120 and I think 150 HP models. Not many folks know much about them these days. And the outdrive was white back in the day.

Thank you sir; You have been a great help.
The drive has been painted black well every thing out side the hull the inner transom gard and tilt pump are white.

I can't believe how well this thing runs. Cleaned the points, fresh gas and a good battery she fired right off smooth as silk. The shift interrupt switch even works. Now all i need to do is find an impeler

86, if you're leavin that thing outside please run some antifreeze thru it. And I don't think it has an interrupt switch. Also the idle needs to be so low you think the motor is about to shut down. Like 600 or 700 rpms. That's to keep from tearin stuff up when you shift. Take the impeller out and carry it to a boat shop that deals with the Sierra folks. They can get you one.

Can you not regulate the tilt to be used as a trim just by raising it a bit??? I did this for years on a 21 Ft Glasply 160 mercuriser. Just curious. Worked well for mw. pugetsound

She has been winterized a block full of antifreeze.
The impeller is still working I just don't trust it.

It has the interrupt switch mounted on the transom shield it kills the eng just like i thought it should.

I don't think the tilt system will take the pressure. But it is worth a try.

That's cool. I just understood that our model didn't use one. On others it's worked by a switch in the shifter control and I deff don't have that in mine. What triggers it? Learn something everyday!

86... sorry It took so long to get to you. I have been trying to get my lost (forgotten) PW for about a week and a half. My craft is not like but exactly like yours. I am 90-95% complete on restoration. If I can remember all your questions. you will not find any ID numbers on the boat (none that I could find) but, you can date it ...at least as accuate as possible by the Merc manu #s.

On the port side back you will find a merc number. If the out-drive has not been changed, it will match the numbers on the "flat: on the upper side of the out drive. 110hp had a very short manu period. If I remember ... about 2 years then it went to the 120hp. Again..memory.... I think the cut-off year was 66. If you google mercruser manu years it will give you the year your motor/drive was manufactured. Now.... assuming it went in the boat the same year??? that would give you a relative firm date of your boat. Hints from lessons learned.... if your state requires registration, use that number as your boat ID# or you will have "boat loads" of trouble getting the mental midgets at DMV to give paper. They really don;t care if it is a right number or not they just want an anchored number to put on their paper work. If you pull the motor do everything in your power to save the formed exhaust hose that goes from the motor to transom. After months of searching I am convinced I got the last one in the free world. My boat has the the same tilt plate but has a cig lighter where your key is but my parts boat has the key switch. The motor is a chevy 153cuin? It is a common industrial model. There is nothing on my boat that if could be replaced isn't, and if could not be replace was rebuilt. Motor bored over with new pistons, new cam, rebuilt head with cutout/larger valves, rebuilt alternator/carb/starter. New fuel pump with electric assist. every wire from front to back and motor replaced. Replaced above deck tank with below deck tank..... etc. Date mine as a 66 Holiday V. Got a 2 ft stack of books. Let me know if you need anything else.

Here is a link to download a copy of the Service manual you need...

http://www.4shared.com/document/_nhtFGoc/Mercruiser_Service_Manual_01.html

Thanks for the manual link AL will be a big help.

North Beach the switch is activated by a spring loaded rocker where the lower shift cable connects. Looks just like some of the mid 70's stuff. Took a closer look at some wiring diagrams seems one model had it and one didn't only other difference had to do with the alternator.

grzzzz Welcome Lets see this thing(we are alittle crazy about the old tiny's)
In IN it is fairly easy to get them registered. I had '67 starcraft caravel that had no numbers either all it took was a police inspection.
I have not made up my mind about the eng and drive yet but thanks for the tip on the exhaust tub. I have good 140,165 I6 and 228 v8 with drives to match plus the 110 runs real good on the hose. I have a long way to go before i get to that point.

Our State Patrol will issue you a temp.. lic for a boat and a trailer. After three years if it has not been reported as stolden they will issue you a clear title. fairley easy to do here except they get serious about trailer weight, but a sheet from a trailer factory is usually close enough for the weight.

I finally got around to changing out the trailer under the old girl. Hanging a boat from your garage rafters should be an Olympic sport. Went from this fine specimen of what the heck were they thinking.

To the much lower and more modern.

She is a bit dirty but sets nearly a foot lower has built in steps, great tires, and is long enough.

I like the replacement trailer. I also have a nice 79 Holsclaw dual axle, it needs replacing because I prefer(require) the ability to drive-on the boat versus cranking a roller, even though it has a power winch. In other words, I will have a Holsclaw sitting around with no boat on it when the weather breaks, and then will try to sell it to someone who likes that style.

That's what I call an upgrade. That other trailer can't hold a candle to the new one, even some nice bunks for her to sit on.:D

Are you planning on taking rig back to factory as a restore or more of a custom job?

That pic doesn't really do it any justice all of the rollers are cracked or gone. Not to mention the obsolete 4 lug hubs and coil springs.

I plan to do her along the same lines as my ss or maybe a L shaped bench with a single captains chair something like alot of the inboard ski boats.

Thats a great start, be patient when doing the waterpump/impellor kit as its tricky and there is an order to replacement! Cant remember what it was as I had to go through anger managment when that was done! Have fun

Try a place called "wholesalemarine.com" Out of Ohio. If you are lucky you will get an older guy, Bill I think??? He has located most of the old hard to find parts I needed. Have your Merc # handy.
