Re: Opening day for permit shotgun deer season NJ

We have so many deer here in NJ its ridiculous. I wish more people would hunt.

Have had venison a number of times from different people, never cared for it. So I don't hunt because I know I won't eat it. Worst thing I ever had was venison hot dogs. Uggg.

For some reason, I have not seen many fox this past year. And because there are fewer fox, there are suddenly animals in my yard I never had before, like rabbits and squirrels. Wish the fox would come back. Don't know what drove them off.

Happy Hunting!!!

Re: Opening day for permit shotgun deer season NJ

My cousin hunts in my back yard and saw a "12 point" and 4 does this morning.
I'm thinking of going tomorrow since he says he's had enough for this year. (He did get a doe about a month ago. Last year in my back yard he shot at 3 bucks and a doe at less than 60 yds. in one morning but didn't hit anything. Said he needed a scope! He'd been hunting all year with a new scope that was bore-sighted-only at bass pro where he bought the scope. I sighted it in this morning at 25yds. and it was 2.5 inches low and to the right. UGGGHH! Yes, he is very inexperienced....
Anyway, good luck with your deer, guys.

You could donate the meat to poor people, don't have to eat it.

That the bayu with the ducks?

We have ducks here also, but the rich people on the water call the cops, and they bend to the wish of the home owner and chase you.

Never mind that waterfowlers have hunted that water for 300 years.

Re: Opening day for permit shotgun deer season NJ

I have been and continue to be a advocate for hunting and fishing. Below is a letter that was published in a local paper i wrote. I omitted my name hope thats ok.

Resident fears law will curtail hunting and fishing in New Jersey

No hunting and fishing allowed! Is this the sign we will see as we enter the state of New Jersey? Will one of the greatest American traditions and pastimes be outlawed in New Jersey? I never thought it could happen here in America. After all, in England I thought the people were used to a government that didn't care about the little people. Yes, it happened in England years ago; the government took away all the firearms and outlawed hunting except for the richest of the rich.

Will New Jersey pass Assembly bill A-3275 and its Senate companion S-2041 that will change the fish and wildlife board into a political arm of the government? And to whom do we have to thank for this wonderful gift of another blow to our freedoms? Mike Panter and Ellen Karcher that's who. Maybe (Assemblyman) Panter and (Senator) Karcher forgot who also lives in New Jersey.

I live in New Jersey with my wife and four children, two girls and two boys. My 15-year-old boy is a Boy Scout and an avid hunter and harvested his first deer last year. My 12-year-old boy is also a Boy Scout and an avid fisherman. We fish on my 21-year-old boat on Raritan Bay. My 10-year-old girl loves to fish also, my 20-year-old daughter and my wife are also known once or twice on really nice and calm days to wet a line.

I have hunted and fished for close to 44 years. I am the counselor for the archery, shotgun, rifle, boating etc. merit badges for the Monmouth Council Boy Scouts.

What am I to tell my kids now? What will I tell my grandchildren when they ask me why the government outlawed fishing poles? There are thousands of little people just like me in New Jersey. We are not rich people who can afford million dollar boats. I can't even afford hundred thousand dollar boats. But we, the little people, fish off banks, streams and bulkheads all over New Jersey.

We, the little people, say enough is enough.

Re: Opening day for permit shotgun deer season NJ

Going out tonight to see if we can bag the one.

16 year old son is asking me to keep him home from school, to go out this morning cause it's opening day, regular season, shotgun.

Used to be when i was a kid living upstate NY we got opening day off from school.

Guess things change but the tradition lives on.

I said to my wifey for lifey, how about this one time he stays home?

She let loose, you thought she caught me having a affair with Pamela Anderson.

So kid went to school, will go out soon as he gets home, everything is laid out in the dining room to quick change for him.

It's freekin cold, no kidding. Wind blowing here in Jersey 54 mph feels like minus something degrees.

Next year he hunts as a adult ill just drive him out and wait in the car.

Woa won't have to drive him he'll have a drivers lic. even better.

I hear ya ... kids would get first 2 days off here ... not enough teachers for classes. That changed this year ... kids only got first day off.

Re: Opening day for permit shotgun deer season NJ

Leaving the house this morning at 6:00am, it was 15* outside and dark. About a mile from the house I have to slam on the brakes to avoid a big deer that just waltzed out of the woods and into my lane. I stopped and gave a long blast of the horn, and the deer slowly walked to the other lane. About 100 yards down the road I see a pickup with a few guys unloading their stuff from the truck and checking their shotguns. I think that lazy deer had best get a move on if it doesn't want to end up in the back of that pickup! LOL!

I counted over a dozen trucks parked in fields this morning. Looks like hunting is alive and well in northern New Jersey. Just sit on my deck and you can have your pick of bucks and does.

Have a successful and safe hunt.

Re: Opening day for permit shotgun deer season NJ

Son comes home and goes in the garage where i d/l and printed the espn solar lunar table.

He goes over it and say dad today is a bad day can we go tomorrow and thu and friday it explonationaly gets better every day from today.

He says too many people out there on opening day moving all the deer around and says, he remembers last year when hunters without even orange on are trampling and trespassing all over.

So said your sure cause i really want to go today, to him,{ like in a pigs eye} every part of my body hurts from the cold.

Too many years working out in the cold some days 18 hours.

So i say one last time common it's time for the big one you been dreaming of.

He says tomorrow, don't want to make a mistake and kill one of them dummy's without orange on.

Kid has arrived, gotta say a tear welled up, i'm so proud it hurts.

I was bow hunting, and fell asleep just like that guy in the pic. on the ground with my back to the tree.

I was in full camo head to toe. Was windy that day.

Woke up with 2 does 5 feet away, couldn't get a shot cause when i made the final draw they saw me, and took off.

If the rain holds off I will be taking the littlest aspeck out for a walk after school today. She is 7 and loves to go hunting with Daddy. She said this morning ... maybe you can show me some more edible berries, and tracks, and other things, then we can have a science lesson in the woods! Yep, what a gal, she loves nature, understands hunting and why we do it, loves to eat what is killed ... she is PETA's worst nightmare! :D

The GIRL that works with me, just turned 20, has killed a spike with her crossbow and a 10 point with 30-06. She would go hunting after work on the way home.

Re: Opening day for permit shotgun deer season NJ

What a great day to be alive.

Son gets home hits the head while i'm suiting up.

Absolutely perfect hunting evening. Get out to the spot about 1/2 hour after he hits the house, and it was just slightly overcast and around 50 degrees.

Wind was slight, just tickling the pine tips, sorta of like a little song.

Settle in with 2 big trees between myself, and the deer slayer and may i add a dead shot, but i don't take no chances. I'm also slightly behind him.

Canada geese go flying low over our heads singing their song among themselves, and the waiting begins.

15 minutes before the end of legal hunting, and slightly turning to dusk, the magic time, i see him about 75 yards thru a clearing and his head is all that is visible, with his body straight back obscured bye overgrown brush.

I swear hes burning a hole right into my head with his stare. I avert my eyes not looking directly at him, i froze the second i saw him.

He moves to my right with a few large trees between us, i move my rifle to my shoulder and take the safety off in one smooth motion.

And he's in my sights as he steps out with just his head around the tree.
He turns around and goes the other way, and sticks his head around the tree.

No shot nada, he just never came out on ether, side just went slowly back the way he came.

I could have taken a head shot maybe, and maybe, got him, and maybe wounded him, and maybe missed him; But like i tell the deer slayer, once the shot is gone from the barrel you can never bring it back.

There is no maybes. And no deer on the back of the truck.

Tomorrow is another day.

Re: Opening day for permit shotgun deer season NJ

Nice overcast, 40 degree afternoon here. The littlest aspeck and I head for my FIL's for a little visit/hunt. Spot 5 deer by the road just before we turn up his lane ... standing under a "No Hunting" sign. We get back the lane and see a dozen squirrel, 3 turkey roost above our heads, we can hear deer moving in the distance, but can't see them through the thicket. All in all it was an almost perfect evening. The littlest aspeck had a GREAT time and she learned to walk a little more quietly in the leaves. There is nothing quite like being with the youngsters during a hunt!

Re: Opening day for permit shotgun deer season NJ

I used to take the deer slayer with me when he was 7 and at 10 he got his hunting license.

At 11 he shot his first. And helped me skin and butcher his deer.

And was never queasy. And was touching all the organs asking me what they were.

Now he explains how each one works with the other.

He ticks off the names of each bone, cause he has been studying them in a book my brother the doc. gave him.

He says someday he wants to be a vet, loves animals.

Tells me today how he loves to sit in the woods and listen to the birds, and watch all the animals, and never feels at peace, as he does in the deep woods.
