Re: Opening day for permit shotgun deer season NJ
Just got in ... only saw 2. Could have shot, but was waiting for antlers or a better shot. Watched them walk up the other side of the valley. Lot of walking today, no animals to show for it ... almost hit one on the way home though.
Oh, and the funny story of the day ... I was watching a squirrel that went up the tree beside me and started dropping leaves, branches, etc down on me. I moved to another tree and he follows, doing the same thing! I moved back to my original position, my arms were leaning against 2 trees and there was another tree in front of me, my hands were about shoulder height and about 8 inches from the front tree (which I was going to use as a rest when a deer came up the hollow).
Anyway, the squirrel runs down the tree and over to another tree in front of me, then to the tree RIGHT in front of me (about 2 feet - remember, my hands are about 8 inches from this tree). He runs up the far side of the tree to about knee height and comes around the tree, staring at my left knee. After about 30 seconds he goes behind the tree and comes around the other side, looking at my right knee ... I was sure he was going to jump on me! But he didn't, he went behind the tree and climbed up to hand height, and came around to my left hand! Yep, 8 inches from my left hand. He was looking at my face and I was worried he was going to jump on my arm and run up and bite my nose! After 30 - 45 seconds he ran around the tree and came out at my right hand! I am being checked out thoroughly by this squirrel! Then he goes behind the tree and goes to the top of my head, where he acts like he is going to jump on my hat before scurrying down the tree and onto the tree my left arm is leaning on, then down off and back behind me! All total, the squirrel was within 10 feet or less of me for about 15 minutes. It was a crackup to watch ... he knew I didn't belong, but couldn't figure out what I was! Defintely worth a day in the woods to mess with a squirrels head! LOL!
Tomorrow is the last day of rifle season, so I will be out also!
