Re: Out of Tricks, very stuck flywheel

I just put another two hours into it. This time I built a wood stand that holds the engine up, by the bottom of the fw. So the motor is 1" off the ground, the fw is being supported, and the weight of the block is pulling down on the flywheel. I heated the entire fw to about 120 degrees, with a heat gun. Took my impact gun tightened the puller till it stopped turning, pryed up on the fw, then whacked it with the hammer. I kept repeating the process, including grinding the center bolt back into shape after I hit it for a while. After an hour, I just cranked on the puller with the impact gun, and broke another bolt. Can I make the three holes larger and re thread them for larger bolts? Any possible problems?

Racerone is not new, he has close to 9000 posts on another forum site. He just switched over to this site recently and has built up close to another 700 posts. (I like round numbers :) )

Joe -- good info. Got a link to the other forum? I like round numbers too, although that's probably more a mark of a hobbyist. Has to be room for both hobbyists and pro techs on a discussion site, as you know.

I removed the broken bolt. Set the puller back on, tightened till it stopped again. Now I have the heat gun pointed down by the fw nut. As daselbee suggested. I will check on it every 15 mins.

And thank you for all the suggestions so far from everyone. I will continue to post my process.

I heated the entire fw to about 120 degrees, with a heat gun.

120 isn't hot enough. How do you know it was 120?

Anyway, focus the heat gun on the crank end and leave it. Put it up close, maybe 2" away.
Go away for an hour.
The paint may peel, it will get so hot. You will not be able to touch it. Then whack the center bolt. And I mean whack it.
If you are 'shrooming the end of the puller bolt, you are hitting it hard enough.

By the way, is this a horse of a puller, or is it a toy? If it is a cheap Harbor Freight light puller, it may not be enough for the job.

My stuck wheel popped right off, with this method.

Abomb27 -- haven't busted any flywheels yet with methods, and I've hung a couple of motors from the garage rafters, kind the same principle you have gone to(!) Breaking bolts isn't a good way to go, and probably should explore another puller -- used factory puller would be good, and of course I like the "frowned upon" option. I have a mental pic of the motor hanging in your garage -- need a two by four underneath the skeg, in case it works.

EUREKA!!!! Daselbee I did exactly what you wrote in your post. Although I was kinda worried about using heat. I set it up, went inside got a drink, went outside got some firewood for my wood stove in the garage, and as I was walking by I heard pop. And then she was off. It only got up to 133.5 degrees so I doubt I damaged anything. Got to say that was a pretty easy way. Thank you everyone for the help. Im sure I will have more threads when I start putting it back together.

Flywheel nut? I hope you have about a quarter of an inch of space for the flywheel to pop up against the bottom of the nut. Surely the nut is not down on the flywheel surface, but simply loose......nah...couldn't be....:)

I was going to suggest a piece of dry ice on the flywheel. It is available here in small pellets. But you got it.. good job.

No it wasnt. And motor ran fine before I pulled it. Is it possible to put the key in backwards, or it will only go one way?

Normally they will only go in one way, the half moon curved side slides into the crank slot, with the flatside being for the flywheel to sit in.
Itd be hard to do it the wrong way unless you were determined to give it a big bash with the hammer without giving it a very easy second thought as to whether it would actually go in easy the other way around

Thats the way it was, half moon towards the crank. I couldnt remember. I do have a service manual paid $79 and it is worth every penny. The only problem is i constantly use it while working on the motor, so I keep getting greasy finger prints all over the manual.
