Re: Outdrive snapped in half!

The hinge pins should have been put in with RED locktite which is hard to get out without heat. the strike could have oblonged the hinge pin holes making the bell housing damaged.

As far as the lower goes, without a teardown it is hard to know what damage might be done to the bearings, races and/or the housing itself on the inside. The bosses are meant to take a thrusting or rotating load not a side load.

As for a depth finder - got one. I had plenty of water under me. As for a rock? I'm not even sure I hit something, because as I'va said, there wasn't a jarring stop. It was just the bang and the engine rev.

As for the red locktight: The last couple off times I had the boat in the water I noticed that my trim gauge and trim limit switch wasn't workin. I just thought the senders had gone bad. I haven't checked to see if they're good, but now I'm thinkin they weren't workin cause the hinge pins weren't tight. I'll check them when I get a chance. Been workin crazy hours at work so not much time to work on the boat, but I'll get er done!

I am going to say that that unit was on bowered time and must have struck something before you owned it. I don't think that you had a under water impact.

I have been around boat for many years have hit lots of stuff in lots of diffent boats and never saw something like that yea lots of bent probs broken skegs cracked lowers even but never have I ever seen something like that.

many underwater impacts produce hairline fractures that may not be present when the impact happens but with time show eventually.

Okay! Got some really good news and some news I can deal with. Good news - Engine is sound! No sign of anything wrong. I started it up and went over it listening with a rake handle and no rattles or bangs or squeals. Just purrs like she did before! :) Bad news is the trim switches must be bad. I turned the key on and turned the trim sender switch and the dial on the dash flickered but wouldn't stay in any one place, and the limit switch didn't do anything while I had a friend raise the trim. I can deal with trim switches though! :)

there is a good chance that the wires on the senders are just broken in one area....look for the break and try to solder.
they are a real pita to change when the motor is in the boat and the gymball and bell/bellows are on

Wow that's one heck of a hit! Lucky that you didn't get a ton of water in the boat which is the the thing that worries me about any underwater strike...as noted I'd want to get the transom itself checked, even though a typical I/O transom is close to 2 in thick you could still have stress cracks evident on the outside 'glass or even on the inside...but if the transom is OK you may be just fine after replacing the drive...and...I'd for sure...GET FULL INSURANCE...for boats...it's really pretty cheap...even here where car insurance is expensive...
