Re: Painting (?) A New Floor...

I can't find that either. The more I try to find paint on lowe's website, the more I realize their website is terrible. I'll go there and person and see what they have.

So if I were to mix the whole 8 oz of hardner with a full gallon of paint, how many days would I have to use all the paint before it got ruined? It would be significantly easier to mix the whole amount at once, especially since I'm not totally sure how much paint I'll need per coat. But I could 'schedule' things so I do a coat per day for four days straight if I need to.

8 hours and the paint is no good. Those of us who have painted our boats with this method can guide you with all the details you will need. Take a deep breath and relax. It is not that hard. I have not seen a Lowe's yet that did not carry the Oil Base Acrylic Enamel Paint. They will NOT have the Hardener but you CAN order it online or prolly get it from Advance Auto like I posted previously. You can go to the Dollar store and buy a measuring container that will allow you to measure the hardener in oz's and make it easy to mix the paint. Some plastic measuring cups will allow you to get the appropriate amounts of paint as well. Some plastic containers to mix it all in would be good to. For Roll n' Tip painting, 2 cups of paint and 1 oz of hardener would be a good starting point if you are only painting the top cap of the boat. I painted my entire 16' Hull with 3 cups of paint. 1 1/2 cups did my top cap but I was spraying. I'm sure 2 cups rolling would have done it too.

Hey Woodonglass

I went to lowes, they didn't have the tractor paint. They had this stuff:
(yes I know this is a home depot link, and I know its a link to green paint. But lowes website is impossible to search on, this is exactly what they had, in white, in quarts):
http://ipsite.org/19kj

I would assume that would be as good, or better, than the other paint. You think? I didn't get any because they didn't have gallons. But apparently home depot does.

... apparently Home Depot only has it online, is out of stock online, and doesn't ship to Massachusetts.

I'm not even done sanding yet. I'm just trying to get the paint ready to go in the mean time. And good thing I am getting the paint so far ahead of time, this stuff is so hard to get. In the end, I may just have to buy a bunch of quarts of it.

The Lowe's in Woburn, MA has the Rustoleum Professional Oil Based Arylic Enamel IN STOCK.
http://www.lowes.com/pd_35475-90-K7792402_0__?productId=3067159&Ntt=rustoleum+paint&pl=1&currentURL=%2Fpl__0__s%3FNtt%3Drustoleum%2Bpaint&facetInfo=
It's basically the same Paint at the Valspar Tractor Paint. You can use the acrylic enamel hardener in it. You can get arcylic enamel hardener from Advanced Auto IF they sell car Paint at their store. Not all of them do so call first. 2oz per quart is the mix formula.

Thats exactly the lowes I went to, and they had that in quarts, but no gallons. I guess I'll have to go back.
How do you check to see if a store has it in stock on that page?

Also when I mix the hardener with the paint, do I just stir it well with a stick? Or do I have to have the paint shaken in a paint shaker?

Re: Painting (?) A New Floor...

You measure the Hardener and Pour it into the Paint 30 minutes prior to painting. Stir with a stick for about 3 minutes then cover it and let it set for 15 minutes. Then stir it again for 3 minutes and cover it and let it sit for another 15 minutes. Stir it again for 3 minutes and you're ready to paint. You MUST use all of the Hardner Mixed paint in 8hrs. After that it is NO GOOD. Like I said before I always mixed 2 cups of paint and 1 oz of hardener so I KNEW I would use it all. I was spraying though. If you are rolling then Mix a quart and 2 oz. You can recoat in 4 hours so you can get two coats with one mix of paint.

Interesting. Ok I wonder if they maybe don't have it on display. I'll have to go back.

So if I do paint, then sprinkle sand, then do two coats of paint on top of the sand, do you think that will still be grippy enough to keep me off my ***, but not as grippy as sandpaper?

Practice on a scrap piece of wood first. You'll be able to tell how much texture the sand gives and how much to use.

Re: Painting (?) A New Floor...

Good plan. Last question (until my next question). Is there something I can use as fiberglass filler thats cheaper than the standard fiberglass filler. I need so little, I hate spending $30 on a pint of the stuff when all I need is a little tubes worth. Will wood filler work since it's being painted with several coats? If not, will anything else or do I have to get the $30 stuff?

Thats it or any other like it. Typically most auto Paint stores will have it.

I got a gallon of the paint today! No luck with the hardener yet. I found some online for $28 but it had special hazmat shipping that cost $93 so I passed.

Some imperfections in the floor's fiberglass. They look like little air bubbles that are getting uncovered by my sanding.

Well since you're painting and not Gelcoating you could use some of this epoxy and mix in some Talcum powder to thicken it and use that to fill em. Wash it down really well with acetone first.

Re: Painting (?) A New Floor...

I finished the bulk of my sanding and smoothing today. And it looks like I have more spots to fill than I realized.
My other concern is that some of the spots I need to fill our right in the middle of the floor, and so they are going to be high traffic areas. Will a fiberglass filler be strong enough to handle that?

I found this on amazon, will this do?
http://www.amazon.com/762-Bondo-Hair-Strand-Fiberglass-Reinforced/dp/B000CINDQ8

ALSO
I have one small area (the bow floor) that is actually white gel-coated fiberglass just like the top of the boat. So I thought a lot about it, and decided its going to look best if I paint it with the rest of the floor, even though the new paint will be so noticeably whiter than this 30 year old "white". To paint over this old, already white fiberglass, do I just simply scuff it up with 80 grit paper and then paint it?

What do you call those "texture additives" you out into the paint? I've searched for them but couldn't come up with anything.

Re: Painting (?) A New Floor...

I looked a little harder and found the valspar enamel hardener and some rust-oleum texture additive.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000LNY1MY/

Woodonglass, any opinions on that texture additive? It says you mix it in, but I plan on using it with the "shake on wet paint, then paint over it" method.

And I do have a nice text piece of wood ready to go, so once I get these last two components, I can paint over some texture with varying amounts of coats to see which texture give me the results I want.

I'm getting real close now.
I plan on doing the final sanding and the big cleaning this weekend.

Oh and that reminds me, does dawn leave a residue? I wanted to hit the boat top to bottom with a regular scrubbing before I wash it again with the TCP. There's fiberglass dust and crap everywhere at this point. So my tentative plan would be, a good scrubbing with dawn, then a good scrubbing with TCP. Then a good scrubbing with acetone before painting.
