I have a 15 foot ski boat that is trailered. Paint is pretty knackered so want to give it a respray.

Im wanting to rub back the top layer of paint with a 400 grit sandpaper and then hit the boat with Hi-Fill primer.

Rubbing the boat back to get a smooth layer and then spraying on the topcoat and clear (clear is going to have Poly*Flake)

Im only planning on doing an "on trailer" respray for aesthetics only.

Is there any special kind of primer i would need to use? Would 400grit sandpaper be OK to rough up the paint for adhesion?

TIA :)

Hi Sabbath,

Best response I can give you is to decide on the actual product/materials you plan to use and follow their recommendations for the prep...

If the paint/gel-coat on the boat is in good mechanical condition, other words not flaking or peeling off, you should be good to go...otherwise you will need to remove any offending areas until you have a solid base...then prep as per the chosen materials...

Sounds like you have a plan. Choose a paint that can withstand lost os sun and moisture. My 'flake finish got bubbles after a few years. Use the primer recommended. Grind out any spider racks and fill with kitty hair glass and resin, and cracks may not come back.

Roll and tip works prettygood for hull sides and bottom, with solid color paint. Obviously the best topside finish will be sprayed.

I dont see why a high fill primer is needed if you repair everything before hand. .. Just a 2 part epoxy spot prime where needed.

Yup 400 grit and a scotch bright purple pad is all you need for the prep of the paint and clear.

I would say that you can flake your clear .. but you might consider solid clear over the flake ( so the flake is not exposed to the surface ).

YD.

PS. I dont know how you roll and tip flake .. anyone tell me cause Im open for suggestions :) ..

Thanks for the responses. Much appreciated.

Was going to lay the hi-fill on just to save time flattening out some surface imperfections with sandpaper as the boats a little rough in spots, but will be using filler on some of the deeper scratches.

Was going to lay the flake down in the first couple of layers of clear and then spend the day laying more coats of clear over the top where needed.

This was the last thing that i had painted (got a mate on the gun in the shed, he's better practiced than i am and trust him with the job)

yes well said, and 400 grit is really over done for priming in 2k unless you are only putting down one coat, you can paint 2k wet on wet over courser, 400 grit is what i use for sanding prime to paint solid colours, 600 for metallic and 800 to re-clear can goo down to 180 grit dry on a orbital before priming but if spot priming sand edges with red/purple scotch bright or 320/400 grit, i painted my boat in 2 pak. hopefully that helped
