Re: Painting with Perfection
Perfection is a very high quality paint, not just in apperance but in durabiltiy also. There is no need to spray with it......... i know that goes against the norm, but you do NOT have to go that route.
Actually rolling it out create's less taping and masking, less overspray err none. After doing two boat's now the system i have come up with is so simple a 10yr old could do it.
1 I use no thinner's or reducer's, they only create bubbling or stippeling and delay drying time futher allowing dust or bug's to get in the paint
2. Start the paintiing in 70 degree heat, the paint does not setup as fast and high temps can speed it up and i like to take my time.
3.To apply the paint i use 4" or 6" inch foam roller's, i have found that if i roll about 8'x4' i can go back and using a fresh roller i can roll out any bubble's or stippling and runs that are present( Use a very light pressure here very and be patient). It leaves a very very fine nap on the paint and level's out as flat as glass...time is key here do not let the time go beyond 5 mins to flatten out imperfections or stippling and once your done and she setup's that's it leave it
4.Do not try to get the paint to cover in one or two coat's it will take 3 or maybe even 4, thin coat's will not run and if you go back with 300 grit with in 24 hour's in 70-80 degree heat it's still soft enough that it sand's very easy scuff the surface so you can apply the next coat. For myself i found that sandiing before the paint really harden's make's the job much eaiser.
5. After 2 coat's look very closely for minute run's or imperfection and carefully sand them out, your now setting yourself up for the final finish the first two are just base coat's make every attempt to not sand thourgh the paint, and if you do... so what, it only take's about a hour to sand paint it again but when your done and if you take your time it's a great look and guess what........your all done with wax and buffer's keeping that gel looking good....
As to priming some say you have to some say ya dont on fiberglass, i have done both and the jury is still out there, but if you do and if you can i'd use Primekote the stuff is as hard as nail's and near the water line i would highly recomend it, but you cannot use it over any paint that is or was a single part urethane..........Ohh now that stuff spray it does not roll well and it is very hard to sand.....very
