Re: Painting with Perfection

Now disater strike's, i have sprayed Bright Sides before and the reuslts were quite good. Perfection is another story, after trying to differnt sprayer's i never was able to get the paint to atomize in a way that i could lay down a light and uniform coat......... This is best left to pro's who deal with this paint day in and out, at least for me that is....

This might look good ....it wasnt

That's using 1200 wet paper known as color sanding, i dont know if you can see the vertical waving in these pic's that is sagging, not really apparent when done but trying to smooth out the finish with sand paper, it became very apparent using a buffing compound i was able to bring back some of the paint............ but between the wife and kid's it was back to the drawing board.......

Ohh big thing here for me anyway's, noitce the rub rail is now off the boat, the reason is Perfection dries incredibly hard and when taking off the tape it may add hours to the job that is taking a knife or blade and getting small stips off.........kinda like one glued down the tape to the boat......it's not fun at all....

Re: Painting with Perfection

After maybe 15-20 hours of sanding again using 220 grit i was finally down to a flat finsih i needed any more grit and you tend to just cut it all off the boat and that you do not want to do.

This paint was rolled only, not tipping i used foam roller's i picked up a Fred Meryer's a kinda of target like company i tried to use some West Marine stuff but the foam just fell apart which makes for BS in your paint.

This time i applied 3 coat's very light coat's and sanded very lighty on each coat, the trick is to take your time and let the paint work "flow" that is. Ive metioned no tipping there was none, after mixing up the paint i let it set for 15 mins letting the air bubbles dissapte and then just rolled her out maybe 6' at a time, it goes qucik then i would go back and reroll her again for good measure (sag's) and making sure most of tha paint had been used up out of the roller.

Later on i will post the type of roller's i used, never thought to save them at the time, after a litte buffing i donot believe there will be any imperfections in that paint at all, but rolling it in a garage there is some tiny bit's of dust... so the higher the heat the faster the drying time and less contamination..;)

Great job TG! Question Time,
Did the roller you used leave stipple as you applied it?
After applying the paint did you buff the paint to that finish, or did it dry with that great shine?
Did you color sand between coats or did you color sand before buffing?

Re: Painting with Perfection

Yes there was a very small amount of stippling after passing with the foam roller, i'd go down a 6' patch thoughly one time and when the roller had exhausted all the paint back id go to the beginning and do another swat. It leveled out perfectly each time after about 5 mins, but you cannot go back and do a spot say 15 mins later that will not work.

That finish is the final cure, no sanding or buffing at all, i am very tempted to do a little buffing ( small dust here and there) but i think not, at least for now. I am quite satisfied, thanks RP i still have some gold to go in there it should be pleasing to the eye........... at least mine i hope...

Opp's no color sanding at all, 220 grit very lightly just roughing it up or breaking down any perfections between coating's.

Re: Painting with Perfection

Perfection seems to be designed for application by roll and tip method. I know others that have had trouble spraying it. Personally, I think the results using roll and tip are outstanding and I wouldn't do it any other way. The key is to work in small areas and apply thin coats.

Excellent work.

That looks great, you said you used a roller? If you don't mind could you list what you used? roller types, paint, and primer. Would be greatly appreciated.

Interlux Prime-Kote sprayed

Interlux Perfection rolled only no tipping

Interlux 2316 spraying solvent

Mixed at no more that 10% by volume (2316 to Perfection)

Rolled in 70 degree heat

I guess i should have taken a video of the paint leveling but then again watching paint dry is another adventure......;) It does level practice on a mirror and see for yourself..

Re: Painting with Perfection

Perfection is a very high quality paint, not just in apperance but in durabiltiy also. There is no need to spray with it......... i know that goes against the norm, but you do NOT have to go that route.

Actually rolling it out create's less taping and masking, less overspray err none. After doing two boat's now the system i have come up with is so simple a 10yr old could do it.

1 I use no thinner's or reducer's, they only create bubbling or stippeling and delay drying time futher allowing dust or bug's to get in the paint

2. Start the paintiing in 70 degree heat, the paint does not setup as fast and high temps can speed it up and i like to take my time.

3.To apply the paint i use 4" or 6" inch foam roller's, i have found that if i roll about 8'x4' i can go back and using a fresh roller i can roll out any bubble's or stippling and runs that are present( Use a very light pressure here very and be patient). It leaves a very very fine nap on the paint and level's out as flat as glass...time is key here do not let the time go beyond 5 mins to flatten out imperfections or stippling and once your done and she setup's that's it leave it

4.Do not try to get the paint to cover in one or two coat's it will take 3 or maybe even 4, thin coat's will not run and if you go back with 300 grit with in 24 hour's in 70-80 degree heat it's still soft enough that it sand's very easy scuff the surface so you can apply the next coat. For myself i found that sandiing before the paint really harden's make's the job much eaiser.

5. After 2 coat's look very closely for minute run's or imperfection and carefully sand them out, your now setting yourself up for the final finish the first two are just base coat's make every attempt to not sand thourgh the paint, and if you do... so what, it only take's about a hour to sand paint it again but when your done and if you take your time it's a great look and guess what........your all done with wax and buffer's keeping that gel looking good....;)

As to priming some say you have to some say ya dont on fiberglass, i have done both and the jury is still out there, but if you do and if you can i'd use Primekote the stuff is as hard as nail's and near the water line i would highly recomend it, but you cannot use it over any paint that is or was a single part urethane..........Ohh now that stuff spray it does not roll well and it is very hard to sand.....very

Re: Painting with Perfection

so in theory, if i was trying to make the boat white could i just use the primer as the paint?
