How many of you always wear their PFD when boating. Reason I am asking is that on our local radio station the OPP expert said that 70% of boaters did not wear them.
Just curious.

Heard they are considering making it law here for any boat under 6 metres long.

I know I should always, but I rarely do wear mine. I should look into those self inflating ones. I used to have a manual inflating one but it dissappeared a couple of years ago.

I Hardly ever wear one when in the boat unless on a PWC. Always wear one while in the water & water skiing ect. Adults have the choice while in the boat, under 18 wear it or stay on shore.

when alone i always wear a Stearn auto inflatable belt, it pops open and you pull it over your head. the rest depends on which boat we are in.

If they did that survey here, 98.9% of adults would answer they never wear them. Of course, from what I have seen, legal compliance with children who are required to wear them is 99.9% around here.
Your poll is really two questions in one. What was your local radio station's actual question?

Re: PFD's

I tend to wear mine 100% of the time. Some of the safety protective equipment I have to wear on my job is cumbersome to wear, so I feel wearing a pfd is no big deal.

I guess the big problem people have is associating the need of a pfd to the inability to swim. While that's true for a lot of children, most adults should be thinking about how it will aid them if they are knocked out or incompacitated for some reason. I had a friend of mine who's father what out on their boat and accidently slipped on the deck causing him to crack his head and ultimately land in the water. He was knocked out and his wife and friends on the boat could not find him. He wasn't wearing a pfd and ultimately drowned. Its sad, but can happen to each one of us. You just never know.

I never heard about this, when did this pass?

I looked quickly through the current session bills and didn't see anything.

Illegal now in LA to use a kill switch without also wearing a PFD?

I don't get the point of how the two things are connected.

Re: PFD's

no kill switch on mine and the boat doesn't go out unless it's going to be a beautiful day.

i always wear one wakeboarding, skiing, whatever behind the boat.

i broke my leg once wakeboarding, never would have been able to swim. i would have drowned if not for my vest.

i used to let people decide if they wanted to wear a vest while riding. there's no choice now, you ride behind my boat you're wearing a vest.

Re: PFD's

I always wear it when under way. I wear it while I'm fishing too if I'm moving around a lot. If I'm anchored/tied up with my feet propped up eating Vienna Sausages and drinking a Dr. Pepper, I'll take it off.:D If I had one of those auto-inflatables ones I'd never take it off.

Kids and Dogs 100% all the time.

When in motion we wear them. At anchor they come off. We have these bulky bastards now but are picking up some auto inflators.

No actual question from the radio station. I don't really think it is 2 questions in 1 though. More geared to pointing out that the children have to wear them law or not and the adults are being hypocritical by not wearing them themselves on the grounds that they are good swimmers. At anchor I can understand it more to be without but alone at anchor I can not. As stated in an above post about someone going in without that could have been an avoidable death.
I am not saying what is right and wrong here, merely stating some thoughts.

Re: PFD's

Kids under 14 have to wear them on our lake. Adults are on their own. I wear one 100% of time when alone, and 80% of the time with the family. The wife never. We have a pontoon, so I don't worry about us running into anything, but I do worry about the @#$% that pull their small childern across the front or back of our boat no more than 50ft away on tubes.
