ken, your poll is two questions in one, but I won't belabor the point.

And adults who don't wear they life jackets are not being hypocritical, they are being consistant with the legal requirements of their state.

Re: PFD's

louisiana state law just passed that if the kill switch lanyard is enguaged the operator must wear their pfd. its dumb but i would also make my passangers if the weather was rough

Not to dispute your information, but I have seen you make reference to this several times. I've looked in all of the places where the new law should be posted and its not.

Help me out - where are you getting this from?

PS: I wear mine at all times when underway and/or in rough water. I also make all of my passengers do the same. My policy is simple - if you are an adult and don't wish to wear a PFD on my boat, you are not invited to go out on my boat. If you are a child, you will wear a PFD on my boat. If you are a teenager, you may get the adult treatment and you may get the child treatment, depending on your age.

Complying with the law is one thing. Adults setting an example to the children on board whatever the law says is another.

On sailboats helments are starting to become and item of controversy as there are a lot of head wacks when mistakes happen

i can see where there might be some controversy on that. as long as it don't become some kinda law. that said. i've got the boom before. man that'll make ya see stars and wish you had a helmet on.. for sure ya'll duck the next time it comes by. least i did..... ouch.
i'd wear a pfd if i was on a sailboat all the time too. the ones i'v been on (small sailboats) are prone to tipping over. at least when i'm at the helm they are..

Re: PFD's

Illegal now in LA to use a kill switch without also wearing a PFD?

I don't get the point of how the two things are connected.

Usually with one of those coiled lanyards that runs from the kill switch clip to your PFD.

Re: PFD's

when the big motor is on the pfd is on for everyone in the boat. no exceptions. unlike a car a boat has no brakes and it is very diffcult to see submerged or semi-submerged objects such as logs or rocks or stumps or debris. hit something like that and you can be thrown from the boat. if you head hits a hard object you will likely be knocked unconcious. when being thrown from a moving vehicle it is extremely likely that your head will strike a hard object. the only time that water hitting your face will revive an unconsious person is on TV. you do do not operate a boat in TV Land. hitting the water will not wake you up in time to prevent drowning.

not wearing a PFD while operating a boat with the engine on is about as stupid as you can get.

Wow. Didn't klnow it was such a hot button issue. I hardly ever wear my vest unless I am being dragged behind the boat. They're laying all over the boat though. I usually throw one in every seat that way I can direct where my passengers sit. 18 and under its mandatory to wear them.

I am a casual boater and am usually traveling at a whopping 12-15mph...I just love being out in the water.

This is me. I dont wear mine, but its out and available. All kids under 14 I believe are required to wear one. You can believe my kid wears hers. I let her pick it out, its a nice neoprene one that is pink/black so she thinks it looks cool and likes wearing it. We also just cruise around, no hotrodding or horseplay. I will wear mine whenever i jump in the water away from shore, or im tubing or wakeboarding though.

edit: haha, i just noticed i am wearing mine in my avatar pic.

Re: PFD's

So many insist on the youngsters wearing them, yet they themselves don't, pretty confusing to me.

Out on the water it seems MOST I see don't wear them.

My only boating now is in the open ocean in my 13 1/2' Whaler, thus the manditory PDF's. When we had the 28' patio boat on Shasta Lake it was a little different.

At the risk of sounding like a skipping record, I'll simply say that those who do SAR missions will tell you, the folks who are found alive are almost always wearing a PFD, while the ones who are found dead almost always are not.

So, would you rather go home to hug your family again, or would you rather that they have to wait a week or so, scared to death, until your body bloats until it looks like a grotesque balloon and surfaces, at which point it may take a few more days to find?

Re: PFD's

that video makes me think twice about morons not being able to maintain control of their boats. if that was my video, i'd have thrown my computer away out of embarrassment.

those people should be thanking luck for keeping that guy alive. he tried his hardest to do himself in but his vest still saved him.

sorry, i think that video is an awful example of being safe.

The video is cetainly not a good example of being safe, but it is a very good example of just what a PFD can do for even the extremely stupid.

If the motor is running the jackets are on. Everybody wears them. What good will it do to try clinging to your child's PFD after the boat capsizes? I'll bet you won't just swim away to die and leave the kids there.

Thanks Jay, that was exactly the point I was trying to make.
