Re: need help wiring rpm, volts, trim, and fuel gauges and trim motor on 78 evinrude

Re: need help wiring rpm, volts, trim, and fuel gauges and trim motor on 78 evinrude

Problem1) Tilt/Trim Wires: The main harness has 3 wires coming from tilt motor---Green, Blue and Black. The harness looks good and has not been spliced into. Where do these wires go? Control box, guage or solenoid? There is another cord coming from the tilt motor (it really looks like a regular cord (black) from a house lamp or something). Where does that go? Its just 2 wires...Could that be an add-on for the second trim switch that was mounted on the bow? The other trim switch is on the OMC Control Box handle. Not sure if that trim switch even works.

hopefully i get this right, that "house lamp cord" i believe that is the wire that runs straight into the tilt/trim motor, i just replaced a trim pump on a johnson 90 v-4, 3 months ago. that cord runs into a black plastic box it should have a connection in it somewhere for easy replacement if the pump goes out. as for your wires in the 2nd picture green and blue get paired up with the tilt/trim "house lamp cord"[unless those are from that "house lamp cord" then find the black plastic box and there you should see a green and blue wire

as for your black wires i have no clue as your second picture doesnt really show where at in the boat you are and i am not there to trace them backwards. it is insanely hard to try and tell you what goes where when half the wires on a boat are black

try not to zoom in so much on the next round of pics as its had to tell whats what
however im pretty sure the two black wires go to the trim guage and the other three should go inside the trim solenoid box on the back of the motor(those ring terminals on there arent factory)

Now this might get confusing.....this is the THREE wires (red, blue, green) coming FROM the bottom of control box.....notice how after the connecter there are TWO extra wires (white and black ) and the white one goes to the trim gauge. The rest of the wires continue to back of boat and are not hooked up to anything.....see next post and pic.

Now here is the end of that 3 wire harnes (that turns into 5 wires) coming from the bottom of the control box. These wires end up in the battery box at the rear of boat.

Re: PLEASE HELP 1978 Evinrude 115 w/ wiring problems...guages, tilt & solenoid

would the blue and green be up and down and the red be ground coming from the trim button on control box? If so could I connect the blues and greens from box to trim motor and the red from control box to the black from tilt motor? I still dont know what the "lamp cord" style cord is.......jeez....my brain is fried!

Re: PLEASE HELP 1978 Evinrude 115 w/ wiring problems...guages, tilt & solenoid

ok i think i know whats going on here now the previous owner had a solenoid hooked up seperately inside the battery box in place of the relays
inside the cover on the back of the engine are the relays for the trim and tilt those wires hook up in there i have a manual for an 81 85-140 hp and in a bit ill post up the wiring diagram here that i have

the black and the white wire are NOT hooked up on mine either and everything seems to work just fine however i believe they are supposed to go to a trim gauge in the dash and then a sender on the engine the senders go bad overtime and people just unhook em and in fact my sender has been taken off completely

take the engine cover off and post pic of the back of the engine in the mean time ill be getting that diagram posted for you

the lamp cord is for the sender

I think you are right......i pulled of some tape that was on 1 end of the lamp cord an it had a piece of white wire on the end (actually its white w/ tan stripe)...any way that is the same white/tan wire that is mounted to the trim gauge.....making a little sense now. and yes there was a solenoid in the battery box but all the wires were disconnected and just piled up there.....ill go take pic of the back of motor now

Re: PLEASE HELP 1978 Evinrude 115 w/ wiring problems...guages, tilt & solenoid

yeah theres two types of trim and tilt mine has the other style with the relays in a black box ( i didnt include that part in the diagrams to cut down on confusion )
yours has the three wire motor with an extra solenoid for which you now have the diagrams
did the diagrams clear up some questions?

oh and by the way the pics dont show anything out of place o n the engine so you might be ready for a test fire (after you change the waterpump impeller of course ;D

Re: PLEASE HELP 1978 Evinrude 115 w/ wiring problems...guages, tilt & solenoid

I think so.....on the tilt/trim diagram you sent.....the junction strip on very top of page just above the solenoid.......i think mine is missing. Is that strip on top they same as a solenoid? Im thinking the last owner just used a solenoid in place of the strip for whatever reason....? It seems to make sense because 1 of the black wires (lamp cord) coming from the sending unit to the "strip" (what is that called anyway?) gets tied into the white and tan wire that leads to the back of trim gauge just as shown in the control lever and switch diagram. So I need to....?hhhmmmmm?
