after you do all that and BEFORE you start it youd do good to make sure the timing is right....

Re: PLEASE someone get me running again...

Please note....if the WOT timing stop screw is misadjusted...either allowing too much advance OR not allowing enough advance....it will NOT prevent the engine from starting.

Another screw/stop is the idle stop screw. That too should not prevent the engine from starting. It may not run....but it will surely pop and try to start. Advancing the throttle by hand will get you past any mis-adjustment of that screw, and it should start.

BUT, if the timing is way off due to a sheared flywheel key as JB suggests, then you will not be able to see the white painted marks anywhere near the timing pointer as you try to check timing at starter speed. If you see the timing mark when you try it like I posted above, then as JB says....the engine is probably in time enough to start.

Strong blue snap spark that jumps 7/16" with a spark gap checker, and a visible white line for #1 cylinder near/close to the timing pointer, and it should start. If it doesn't, fuel. You can easily spray pre-mix gas down the carb throats to see if it pops over.

Link and sync is definitely in order here. Are you by any chance in Athens GA?

Re: PLEASE someone get me running again...

ok...comp test is about 85 accross....spark is good...i got it running on new fuel..but it only starts when i give it full throttle...then when i let down to idle it was idling way too high (2000)...i messed around now it wont idle at all...when i start it at full throttle then let it down to neutral it dies...couldnt check timing it was way to sunny out tody...gonna try to look to see what it is tonight..oh by the way....the shear pin was sheared...i replaced that

manual says pick up timing is 7 BTDC and Max advance is 32 BTDC....so both my white marks will be on the left of TDC?

Re: PLEASE someone get me running again...

i read that...1 question....why rig a spark tester? why not just take all plugs out except #1 and put the light hooked up to that wire?

because it wont fire if its not grounded and you dont want the resistance of the starter compressing the #1 cylinder you want the engine spinning as fast as the starter can make it go -so charge your battery first

Re: PLEASE someone get me running again...

ok makes sense...can i use a wire from that plug to the block to ground it?

nope itll burn that coil up if you short it dirrectly out get a spark tester from advance auto parts theyre 6 bux a new coil is 25-30

Re: PLEASE someone get me running again...

Levi,
I'm not understanding the reason for a problem with grounding the coil directly and causing damage to the coil. Could you explain further if you wouldn't mind. Sorry to hijack, I was just too curious.
Thanks,
JBJ

what does that symbol mean?

Re: PLEASE someone get me running again...

seems like the timing is off by exactly 1/4 turn on the flywheel??????????? about 90 degrees

Re: PLEASE someone get me running again...

You do see the hash marks on the flywheel indicating TDC dont you?
If so, pull the #1 plug, set the flywheel where the hash mark for TDC is aligned with the timer pointer.
Poke a straw, screwdriver, any tool that will probe into that plug hole and determine if the piston for #1 is at the physical top of the cylinder.

As I type this, I just thought...you DO know which cylinder is #1? Top cylinder on the STBD side...??? You aren't on #2 are you?

Re: PLEASE someone get me running again...

this may be a stupid question but if i line up the tdc hash mark with the pointer ...the #1 piston should be very close to the spark plug hole?

Re: PLEASE someone get me running again...

Yes absolutely. The piston is at the top dead center of its travel in the cylinder. You should be able to touch the piston top thru the spark plug hole within 1" of inserting some sort of tool, like a screwdriver. As you continue to manually turn the flywheel clockwise, the piston will begin it's downward travel in the cylinder, get to the bottom, and begin going back up. When you get to the TDC mark, it will again be at top dead center. One revolution of the flywheel.

You did not answer my question...you are on #1 aren't you with this testing?
