I'm not understanding the reason for a problem with grounding the coil directly and causing damage to the coil. Could you explain further if you wouldn't mind. Sorry to hijack, I was just too curious.

i feel that it will cause the coil to overheat
the coil builds up voltage before the spark jumps the air gap if its dirrectly shortage the voltage dumps out as soon as the coil receives it and this doent give the coil the few miliseconds to cool down before it fires again -this wouldnt be a problem except that it happens over and over
i know from personal experience that a shorted power pack will fry itself in short order and while ive never fried a coil that way .... id imagine and its doesnt seem like a stretch for a coil to go out from the same way if its dirrectly shorted
