My 1996 21 ft 70 MPH performance boat uses a T Handle type rubber drain plug on the outside.

I have had a couple boats with I/Os that had the rubber plugs.

and I don't know of ANY I/O engines that use rubber plugs
I guess I was using the wrong plug on two of my I/Os. Oh well

BTW, "engines" are not where the plug goes. Maybe that's the confusion.

Re: Plug vs bilge pump.

I've had LOTS of boats that have had rubber plugs, both the screw type and the handle. The only ones I've ever had any issue with were the ones outside the boat. There is far too much chance for something to flip the handle up, and although the plug would USUALLY stay in, that is 'usually'.

The water pressure is so minimal it isn't worth mentioning.

I would expect such "attitude" from a random immature member on this site but I am surprised someone with moderator status to be the one giving attitude, respect your position please, remember you are representing this website.

re Pump(s). Carry the biggest baddest one(s) you can afford, with enough battery to back it/them up.

You can never have too much pump.

typed words don't carry the expression of laughter or smile or a jovial tone to convey its just all in good fun so im sorry I misunderstood you.

there was no way for me to know if you meant to be sarcastic or jovial in your comments.

Re: Plug vs bilge pump.

if you are not naked then you at least have some article of clothing on board to rip a temporary plug from and as long as the hole is mostly sealed with your tighty whiteys then pretty much any pump will keep up plenty long for you to explain to the cop why it was that you stripped and used your underwear instead of ripping the sleeve from your shirt........
Doesn't everyone boat naked? Hmm ...

Regardless. Not sure I'd give up my skivvies during anything less than a catastrophy. I did sacrifice a sock once. It was used as a tourniquet on a neglected rusty fuel/water seperator filter ...?

Re: Plug vs bilge pump.

I've had more I/O's with rubber plugs than brass..... I've also had both I/O's outboards with screw in plugs... had one sailboat with a screw in bilge drain plug on top of the deck.

For the purpose of keeping water out of the boat it doesn't matter at all which type of plug you have as long as it is SECURE... inside or outside doesn't matter either but I wouldn't use a flip over plug on the outside or for that matter on any boat that is too big to operate the throttle with one hand and the plug with the other.... twist tight T handle tho is just fine inside or out.

Re: Plug vs bilge pump.

Assuming a 1/2" NPT plug (.84") and the plug at 3 feet (1.25 psi) underwater...
The Water Flow Through an Orifice Calculator estimates a little under 1000 GPH.

In the real world, a 2000 GPH pump might be able to just keep up, but a 3000 might make you feel better.

As stated, the pump is only meant for incidental water removal. Splash, Spray, and Drips.
It was never intended to be a damage control pump.
