Welcome to iBoats!
Use regular old coarse thread deck screws. Predrill your holes. Mix up some epoxy and coat the holes and the screws with it and drive em home. Hopefully your going to use some kind of resin to seal the wood and then paint it, so by using this method the deck screws will last forever.

I'm just sayin...:D

Hi there...

My last scow/jonboat I used deck screws and after 2 years if you try unscrewing the heads twist off.

Il try and seal drilled holes like posted and figerglass resin the heads. thx

Before placing plywood I use black tar and it seems to work well... I once tried white corking and did not hold up well.

So galvanized twisting nails is a no go?

Well if you do it right, and by right I mean Coat the holes and screws with epoxy and then coat the plywood with epoxy and you really should but some fiberglass cloth on it too, and then keep it painted and maintained WHY would you need to remove the screws in 2 years??

I'm just sayin...:D

Re: Plywood Galvanized Screws

The screws looked good but I thought Id make sure.

Il drill holes then resin the holes then screw them in. :)

Fiber cloth does not stick well when taring the boards. I was thinking just figerglass resin(no cloth) the heads.

Hello Mercury..

How many screws do you need m8 ? ..

If you buy Stainless in bulk you should be able to buy some #8x2-3" a pack of 50 for like 15 bucks or less. ( I just got some from my local marine parts dealer 3" 50 count for 8 bucks ).

I would not recommend filling your heads with resin or anything lol..you will never get them out if you NEED to.

Bronze screws are used for Wood boats..or making swim platforms etc. They are not normaly used for Fastening ..

You would need a special bit to screw bronze screws in .. You thought SS was $y hehe..

I need close to a thousand. 15F by almost 4F

Its just a wooden jon boat, don't think il be taken them out.

Salt water must of got around head and rusted shaft.

I was about to nail them in with galvanized screws and glad you guys convinced me otherwise.

I made two jon boats but the front lip I used 4x4 and cut into front angle.

I found this guy.. very simple and looks strong.

Hotwater and heat gun should bend the front lip easy.

All of the advice given is good. Just wanted to agree that deck screws will work as well, been there done that. BE SURE that if you are sanding and hit the screw/nail heads, be sure to epoxy over them. You have knocked off the galv coating and it is susceptible to rust.

Cool price... here it seems in CANADA (maybe I did not look everywhere) there like 5$ for 20. I can't find them in pounds only little boxes.

My last fail boat of 2 summers in salt water must be screw heads with only paint.

Going to fiber resin the heads this time.

thanks for help... il post pictures when I start.

Will look like video posted but with long shaft merc il 20 inch sides and go from there.

Lossing weight this time without front lip I used on my last 3 boats.

Computer land rules :)

I didn't see the post where you said you need 1000 screws. That is a lot of screws! If I needed that many, I'd probably go with a coated deck screw. I don't need very many, so the extra price was justifiable to me.

Cool link... i'm wondering how much I can bent my front bottom lip.

I can get 1/2 plywood for 20$ But I can get marine plywood(forget wood brand) for 32$

Maybe just for front it would bend more?

---------------------------------------------------

In your link

The basic difference between marine plywood and exterior plywood: marine plywood does not contain voids (edge voids are easily filled with wood putty). Taping the seams and edges with fiberglass will effectively seal exposed edge voids. Both marine and exterior plywood contain essentially the same glues. Because boats of this nature are not left in the water for extended periods of time and the difficulty in obtaining marine plywood, we feel that exterior plywood offers distinct advantages. Exterior plywood is considerably more economical and is a standard stock item at most lumber yards. We have had good results with both fir and pine. The choice is determined by comparing quality and local availability. Many small boat builders use Lauan Mahogany plywood Lauan is which is actually five millimeters.. Lauan is pretty, easy to work with and very economical.

Guess it bends the same not sure.

Re: Plywood Galvanized Screws

If you are thinking of using 1/2" ply for the bottom of the boat then I would tell you that you should think again. At the Most you should use 3/8. If you are worried about durability and Puncture resistance then I would recommend placing some 3/4 inch keels on the bottom for added strength and support and like I said before adding some fiberglass mat. I know you said you were going to TAR the wood but you might want to rethink that.

I'm just sayin...:D

Re: Plywood Galvanized Screws

I made my first boat frame out of 2x2 and white corking and with age it moves... best I found was car glass sealant.

With that sealant I noticed fiberglass with age pulls off.

My first boat was 1/2 bottom and kids turned my boat over and busted it ... so I went 3/4 to heavy. :)

theres a dock worker at night now so I was thinking 1/2. :)

Must understand I salt water fish and i'm driving it into Atlantic ocean :)

My last boat sides were 18 inches... and I need a wide bottom for 3 feet waves when crossing channel.

Nerves of steal :) but need wide and high.

You might consider this. A friend of mine was paranoid about sinking so he did this. He use 1/4 luan ply and then use 1" Insulation Board from Home Depot, you know that Blue Poly stuff they use on houses, and he sandwiched it between another layer of 1/4 luan play giving him a full 1 1/2 inch Hull. He use PL Premium Adhesive to glue it all together. I have to admit it was strong as heck and if it got hit he had NO problems. Worked really well.
