My son slipped off the front of our pontoon Sunday and cut his thigh BAD!! Took 20 stiches inside and 16 staples outside.

Has anyone put anything over the point to protect from this kind of accident? I plan on grinding the point making it round, but wanted to ask the more experienced first.

The front top of the toons is the only thing I see sharp enough to cause such damage. My pontoons have V shape 1 1/2" thick plywood plates on top covered in carpet.

So sorry to hear that !!! Hope it dosen't dampen his boating spirits too much. Out of curiosity, I checked mine. They come with those "eyelits" for tying ropes and anchors to. Thankfully there's nothing sharp enough up there to cause your issue. I'm sure there are dozens of temporary things you can put up there when you stop for swimming. Best of luck.

i have no idea why some manufacturers leave the pontoons sticking out past the deck, it's an accident waiting to happen. Hope your son heals well.

Looked at mine and it can't happen. I don't have an open deck on the front of mine and you can barely see the tubes sticking out from under the deck. However, my kids bought a toon this spring and they have little kids 6 & 7. Below is a pic of their toon. I sent her a link to this thread and told her to be carefull. What they have IS an accident waiting to happen.

TTT....

My son healed perfectly. Now mama wants to make sure we have this corrected before boating season starts...

Anyone have ideas about a guard?

Re: Pontoon End Guards?????

why not simply extend the deck enough to cover the toons

+1 for Kevin. Welcome back "Braley", glad things worked out. Maybe a little filing down the sharp edges somewhat, followed by a heavy application of some type of vinyl coating or something similar. Good luck !!!

If it sticks out similar to the one in the picture then I would take two heavy rubber mats when you go swimming and just cover them up.
I think anything that is soft would work.
I'm glad your son is ok, that must have traumatic.

I have thought about extending a wood deck over it, but not sure how it would look..

I will most likely do this with some horse stall mats....wont be pretty, but it will be safe. It was a very traumatic July 5th indeed.

Would you mind telling me the name on that pontoon. I went back through the thread and didn't find the name of the builder.

Re: Pontoon End Guards?????

I have the same issues with my Toon - I have three toons sticking a little further out than this and it is DANGEROUS! I slipped off the front end of my toon and hit the pointed edge of the toon on my leg just below the knee and fell into the water - the pain was brain numbing, we were with a whole bunch of people and I was trying to act cool, but it hurt really bad - I couldn't imagine someone hitting their head or chest on this........

I have been trying to come with a solution, but the front decking also serves as the bumper stop for my trailer and I would have to retro my trailer as well.... any suggestions would be welcomed.

Wow! That seems like a really poor design. Looks like a knife blade sticking up. My toon has the deck extended over just the toon and that way it doesn't interfear with trailering. Seems like you could bolt something through the front deck and build a little platform over the toon faily easy.
