In the process of pressure testing my 1995 alpha 1 gen II drive and it seems to hold pressure. Only problem is that it leaks when I wiggle the lower shift shaft. Is this normal/acceptable? Or should I go ahead and replace the shift shaft seal? If so, can I replace just the seal or should I replace the shift shaft bushing assembly? Thanks guys

Re: Pressure test leaks at lower shift shaft

Thanks bond-o, I've read the manual on the job and it doesn't seem too bad. Just pull the outdrive back apart and a couple of bolts and the assembly lifts straight up. Ever done it? Anything I should look out for? The shift crank can't become dislodged or anything, can it?

Thanks

It is possable to dislodge it and you will need to disassenble the lower to fix it.Put the drive in a suitable holder sllightly tilted (prop shaft high, bullet low, shift shaft should be pointed straight FWD)it`s the way foward gear falls.remove the mounting bolts for the shift shaft housing and VERY,VERY,VERY CAREFULLY LIFT UP AND OUT.install with shaft pointing straight and lower VERY GENTLY UNTILL ENGAGED IN SHIFT CRANK

Thanks Doc, I was expecting as much but since the manual doesn't really say much about replacing it without the lower completely apart (except that it can be done) I wanted to ask.
