Previous discussions about browsers...

Howdy folks,

I know there have been previous discussions about the various internet browsers and many have expressed their frustrations with the latest versions of Firefox, so I did some looking yesterday and happened upon one that is based on Firefox, but seems to be a whole lot better in the programming to stop the CPU and Memory hits that the current versions of FF has, I know I have become very frustrated with FF because of the way it hogs memory and CPU resources.

I installed one yesterday, called PaleMoon, looks, feels like FF and works with all of the same plugins as well as add ons but does not get slower as you use it, I was re-booting FF about every 30 minutes because it was hogging resources so much, I have been running this one for over 24 hours now and have not had to re-boot yet, there are many different versions, including a pure 64 bit version for those of you running 64 bit OS, I was able to migrate my profiles, bookmarks and password lists with no problem at all, they provide a tool for that. I am not affiliated at all with this, but if you are frustrated with FF and don't like IE, have dumped Chrome and still searching, you might want to give it a try, so far I am happy with it.

I am considering Pale Moon as well. Oddly enough, my favorite talk radio guy has recommended that we all drop FF for a political reason that I won't go into for obvious reasons, and he is also promoting Pale Moon. I had already switched back to IE due to the points you have made, and I have been reasonably happy. With that said, I think I'll give Pale Moon a whirl for the heck of it. Cool reminder, thanks.

I also ran into another one yesterday, that looks real interesting, it is a pure 64 bit browser that won't run with many of the current plugins or add ons, but it is also based on FF, it is call Waterfox, sounded interesting, but will really be nice when they finally start working on the 64 bit stuff for add ons and plugins.

Waterfox - The fastest 64-bit browser on the web

Pale Moon........Hmm. No Linux version.....

I also tried Chrome. It didn't seem to work all that good and didn't anywhere NEAR the add-ons of FF

I'm running FireFox 28.0 x64 for OpenSuSE Linux. It doesn't seem to exhibit any of the aforementioned problems.....

I too wanted to "dump it" for the same reasons....... I was LIVID about it.

My other choice would be to use KDE Konqueror (which is based on WEBKIT) which you could use on Windows. Konqueror - Download Konqueror (which I am using right now to post this)

I haven't tried KDE for Windows. but that's how you would get the Konqueror browser on Winblows................Or...........Switch to Linux and use the KDE desktop....then it would be the "included" by default...................(But I digress...............a LOT!!!)

Seriously? Switching browsers for political reasons?

Oh no.......another Linux geek?

Yup, would not have M.S. Dual hard drives with dual O.S. Very seldom use M.S. but option is there for that 1%. Windows XP was IMO the best MS package but is history now.

Actually I tried to switch to Chrome. It works pretty good but Chrome doesn't have nearly the amount of good add-ons that FF has.(they're getting there)

I've been using Firefox since Netscape/Mozilla long before they became Firefox. They were blocking pop-ups in the 90's.

There really isn't a browser that is better than FF. Konqueror & Opera are pretty good seconds though.

Safari is not that great either (and it's based on Webkit and KHTML)

But, I'm back to FF. Chrome works far better on my Samsung Galaxy-3 though......

Hmm....I guess I should read my own sources a little closer!
At the heart of Konqueror is the KHTML rendering engine (which was chosen by Apple to create WebKit, which today forms the basis for modern browsers like Safari and Chrome).

I guess those browsers are where I should be instead of IE till they get a fix for the bug.

I won't be using IE even after they fix their security leak, problem with MS on IE is they never find out about the bug until years after it has been around! Must be quite a bug if it is going to take them a month the fix it!

I like it, seems to be a lot more efficient with the use of memory and CPU resources.

You guys must be running really old machines with no memory for that to matter.

I can see it mattering on a tablet but not on a laptop or a desktop.

I beg to differ Bruce, the machine I am typing this on which had the resource problems with FF is a Windows 8.1 Quad core 17.3 inch laptop running 8 gigs of memory and a 1 terabyte hard drive! The CPU and memory issues have been well documented for a few years now.

The fix is already out - at least for server 2012. Might want to check updates

I just received a note from Microsoft developers network stating they didn't think they would have the fix for IE for up to a month.

Well,

if you believe what USCERT says, at Microsoft Internet Explorer Use-After-Free Vulnerability Guidance | US-CERT
Microsoft Internet Explorer Use-After-Free Vulnerability Guidance

Original release date: April 28, 2014Print Document

US-CERT is aware of active exploitation of a use-after-free vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer. This vulnerability affects IE versions 6 through 11 and could allow unauthorized remote code execution.
US-CERT recommends that users and administrators review Microsoft Security Advisory 2963983 for mitigation actions and workarounds. Those who cannot follow Microsoft's recommendations, such as Windows XP users, may consider employing an alternate browser.
For more details, please see VU#222929.

Also, here's another choice if you don't like FF: Opera browser - The alternative web browser - Download free

Rick
