Problem With The Stereo

I got a new head unit last year, but didn't hook it up right. Basically I didn't have an unswitched hot wire so I just ran the red and the yellow to a switched hot. No problem except that the unit had to go through it's startup every time I turned the boat off and on.

Well this year I ran an unswitched hot wire and hooded the yellow wire up to it so I can use the stereo more often and not have to reprogram it every time I turned the boat off. It worked fine for a couple outings, but now I get terrible static and loud humming every time I turn anything electrical on in the boat. Had it running at very low volume while anchored yesterday. Then we started getting ready to pull up anchor and I turned the blower on. The noise was so loud it almost scared us out of the boat.

I also can not turn the power on and off on the stereo which started about the same time as the interference problem. Wonder if the problem is in the stereo or in the boat? After writing this it sure sounds like something is wrong with the stereo and not the boat. It's a Kenwood and has hardly ever been used.

Yeah, bet I knocked something loose when I hooked up the yellow (constant) hot wire.

Yup , ground. Might not be loose, might need to try and ground somewhere else other than where everything else is tied to.

I disconnected the ground that it was using and grounded to a wire that ran to the amp directly from the negative terminal on the battery. Now it works fine.

As far as turning the power off, I was hitting a button that looked like the symbol for power to me, but I needed to push the Source button and hold it for 3 seconds to turn it off. Still don't understand what that other button does.

Do you have the owner's manual? Most of them are available online thru your manufacturer's support website.

I do have the Owner's Manual and I still don't understand what it does. It's a symbol that looks like a magnifying glass and when it shows the front and what the buttons mean it also shows the magnifying glass. Several pages back it says to push for IPOD search.

Let me guess you have an Alpine? The little magnifying glass button will act as a search while in iPod mode and with satellite if hooked up. When you are playing your iPod and it's NOT in shuffle mode hit the button and the artist, albums, song, genre etc will magically appear and you can choose which of these you want. To take your iPod out of shuffle hit preset button #6 and it will revert to normal play. Cool feature actually. Buttons #5 will repeat songs for us hard of hearing.
