Just rebuilt my carbs today in order to correct an idle problem. http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=033508

Idle problem fixed, but while running the outboard outside my garage, I noticed that there was fuel leaking around the plastic float chamber area. Turns out both plastic float chambers were warped and did not seal properly.

So I called up the parts store to find out that there is an updated float chamber kit. (Too bad the part store guy didn't mention this the first time.) The new float chamber is made of cast aluminum; not cheap at all at $65.00 a pop.

So I come home with the new kits to find out that I'm not done yet. The new cast unit needs new intermediate orifices! (Parts guy never told me about this.) The instructions state "the the plastic float chamber has 1/4-20 thread intermediate orifices, and the new die cast part has #8-32 threads. Order and install replacement orifices with the same inside diameter (number size). To determine the part number of replacement orifice, refer to Carburetor Orifice Plug Chart, Section 1, or your sevice manual."

Like the typical plastic float chamber, the orificies where stuck in it. So I had to cut them out.

The intermediate orifice has 26C inscibed on it.
Does anyone know what the part number is for the new intermediate orifice, which has to have #8-32 threads, that I'll need?

I called my local parts guy and he didn't know and needed the consultation of his mechanics, which weren't working today.

As far as I know, there will be no 4th of July weekend boating trip for me.

Thanks ahead, if you know what part number I need.

Hi there, I had the same problem recently but were lucky enough to find some second hand cast bowls which already had the correct size intermediates installed. From my service manual which as a orifice reference chart, the p/n you require for an 8-32 .026 orifice is 324652. I also believe it is possible to tap the cast bowls to suit the original 1/4-20 orifices - someone may to able to help further on that one...

Thanks for the part #. I appreciate it! I thought about tapping the casting, but it seems like the orifice is installed quite low. I wonder if the actual mounting position is important? Can I just tap it at the top and call it good, or does it need to be down where the factory placed the orifice?

With the 4th of July being on Monday, no one will be open. Guess I'll have to wait until Tuesday before I can get parts.

Again, thanks!

Re: Problems with plastic float chamber on 1994 Johnson V4 90HP.

I'm going to follow this post up for anyone searching through the archives for answers.

On my '93 88spl, I had the same issue with my replacement Al float bowls. Since the threading for the 8-32 26C jets is all the way down at the bottom of the passage, I decided to try tapping the top of the passage 1/4-20 for the jets that were in the plastic bowl. I tapped just enough that the top of the jet was slightly recessed into the "tunnel" that the jet resides in. I cleaned out all the Al chips/shavings and buttoned everything back up. It worked like a charm. I couldn't find any place around me in the cities that had the 26C jets in stock with 8-32 threads, and I didn't want to wait a week for the parts, so I tried it. It works great.

I hope this helps somebody in the same situation - just tap carefully.

Tim
