I am new to boating and have a 1989 Bayliner Aventi 2955 with OMC Cobra 5.0L duel stern drives.

The boat has been raised out of the water for the winter and I am performing maintenance and replacinge the damaged propellers.

My understanding is that the Starboard propeller will rotate clockwise and the Port anticlockwise. After taking off both propellers (15" x 17") I noticed that they were both identical and opperate in a clockwise direction. Am I correct in my thinking?

How do I find out if the Port propeller shaft is in fact turning anticlockwise.

Confussed

Re: Propeller rotation

Not all dual engine set ups are counter rotating.

The best way to find out is to hook up the muffs, start the engine, and put the port engine in forward gear.

Yes.

If the port shaft was turning anti clockwise in forward gear you would know about it.

They are both right - hand rotation. That's pretty standard for Bayliners w/ those drives. Anti-clockwise, counter-clockwise, it's all the same !!! Is that Oak or Pine supporting the boat ?:) Just kidding !!!

Like they said. Both are CW. Just put both engines in the same gear and see if they both free wheel and lock in the same direction.

Rooster, I think it is pine, the marina can't afford oak!!

I would think that if both rotations are clockwise, the propeller torque would force the boat to the starboard?

I will have to wait until next spring to start the engine as it has been winterized, thanks for your input

You don't have to actually start the engine. I believe if you put it in gear the prop will turn in one direction but not the other.

That ^^ and yes as has been said not all twins have a counter rotational set up.

Have you been warned about the OMC cobras?

If you have had the boat in the water (under power) prior to this, and both props are cut the same, then you don't have counter-rotating equipment. It's not that big of a deal. The starboard push that you would feel is generally offset by the finned anode over the props. When you move to a boat that is too big for outdrives (straight shaft/V-drives) then they usually go with counter rotating to give a smoother cruise.

Re: Propeller rotation

That explains it, now I can buy two impellers which are identical, thanks
