Re: props

If you want less top end/more holeshot, you want less pitch. One thing though, watch your top speed rpm's as it will over-rev your engine.

Re: props

Diameter plays a role in this case as well....Go to the largest dia. in the next lowest pitch.
This will let you have a better hole-shot, and hold RPM rise down slightly.
For example, if you had a 13.25X 17", the first step down would be 13.75X 15", but there are 14X 15" props available that I think will suit your needs...this is just an example-don't use my numbers in particular.
You give a size 13...what is the entire number-10X13, 11X13?????????? Also, what sise of engine are you running? :)

Re: props

thanks kenny and chris for the replys.the engine is a 60hp mercury on a fletcher bravo 14ft 1992 at the moment the prop is a 10.5x13p and it will not pull out an adult on a deep water mono

Re: props

13" on that boat should pull plenty.

What you need to do to get it all right is to

a) find your current rpm at wot
b) find your speed at wot.
c) find your boat 'ready-to-go' weight.

Then we'll have a base for starting to give you good advice. Your hull (if OK) is not a very easy planning thing but it's a good boat with a nice speed potential, your prop should have no damage, your motor should sit right on the transom and the hull should be clean and well polished. You should even make sure you carry nothing but the most needed gear (and make sure you do not have water trapped anywhere in the boat).

Re: props

I know the rules say to refrain from posting a new question, but my question ties into this subject exactly, and answers could certianly help Jim to make an educated decision about his next prop.

For better holeshot, would a 4-blade prop be preffered to a 3-blade? I'm thinkin yes, but I would like some confirmation.

Would a cupped prop give better holeshot than a non-cupped?

Re: props

A four blade will give you a better hole shot, but you may want to decrease the pitch by 1-2"

Re: props

If your 3-blade prop has good grip a 4-blade won't improve much. Going down a couple of inches in pitch will, however.

This said, you can't focus on pitch alone. Boat/motor setup, x-dimension and power/weight ratio has a lot to do with it.

You have to define your problem before attempting to solve it. Your achieved rpm @ wot at current setup is a basic info that makes a starting point.

To suit whatever you have in these respects, a certain prop can be chosen. 2, 3, 4, or 5 blades, alu, composite or stainless. Choppers, Rakers, Cleavers. Vent holes, blade designs, cupping and more are things to consider.

You are welcome to check my homepage for a free booklet on the subject.

Jim: If my memory serves me, your Fletcher is rated for 70 hp max so you're pretty close.

Re: props

Keep in mind that although a four blade prop will give you more surface area for "Hole Shot", at the high end you will have 33% more drag from the additional blade. What you gain on the bottom will cost you on the top end.

Nav

Re: props

This is really at the heart of my question. I don't give a lick about top speed, I am only concerned with holeshot, for water-skiing. What sort of prop should I look for? I'm thinking 4 blade, the largest diameter, with the least amount of pitch I can get without exceeding my upper RPM range at WOT.

Am I correct?

Do I want it cupped? What about rake?
