Re: Question for you Northerners...

Well actually I enjoy complaining all the time about Treasure Island, FL however, I am polite and that "locker room" talk and trash talk would insult the Floridians!!

I love the North East and the reasons to stay here are big .............. actually getting bigger...........my grandkids live 3 miles away and the in-laws live 1 hour away. I can visit FL anytime since that is where the rest of my family is spread from the Gulf to the Atlantic, Jax to Weston and many buried in between. Yup FL has the majority of my family...... I am the Northern hold out!

Re: Question for you Northerners...

I live in NW Montana, currently it is 15 here at the house and I spent 2 hours plowing snow this morning, no complaints, I lived in Hawaii, and was actually glad when I was shipped to the Middle East for Gulf War 1, except for the being shot part at that time, I vowed to never live in a tropical climate again, I hated Hawaii and the few times I visited Florida, I could not wait to get the heck out of there. I don't like heat, if you want to hear me whine, let the temps get over 65, I don't like shorts, and I rarely wear shot sleeve shirts, I like bulky coats, hats and glove.

I love watching the deer, elk, moose, mountain lion and a host of other wildlife in my front yard!

In my way of thinking the OP asking the question is the one suffering, not I!

Warm climates are for sissies. . .

I actually like the climate here in New England . . . if you want real cold, there is always Barrow Alaska :D

Sunlight deprivation is why people in the north yearn for the Spring. Thats a big part of it whether they know it or not - it's a biological
thing. Winter in the north gets rid of the bugs!!! I can't stand bugs all year - lived in the Keys for awhile. Spent time in many parts of the country - I love are 4, distinct seasons around the Chesapeake - I'm almost ready for Spring. I would like to see a big snow first.

Winter makes Summer that much sweeter, memorable, and worth looking forward to.
If there was just one long season, I don't know if boating would be the same for me:confused:

If I had your 'free' health care, I wouldn't be able to afford boating down here.

....don't worry, its not free (definitely a myth)....I don't know if it ever was actually....its almost $100 per person/month...just for the ol' record.;):D

I've been spending half the year at The Lake of The Ozarks, and the rest of the year in Central Texas.
75 degrees here in Texas today; 40-some at the lake.

I enjoy the winter, not as much as I used to, but enjoy it I do.

Summers in the northern Wisconsin forests are wonderful.

We have :
cold water lakes (14,000), non deadly snakes, no gators, no hurricanes, less drug trafficking, very few - if any - living homeless drug addicts ( it's -9* right now- will be -25 in a few hours), on average only 10 or 15 hot humid days over 85*, only have insect pests for a few months a year, have lots of good clean fresh water, electric bill is under $700 a year, get to breathe fresh non air-conditioned air, our car and boat batteries last longer, as do the boats and motors. We have hills, and bluffs, and valleys and ravines. In addition to boating, we can rock climb, snowmobile, ice fish, and we have all 3 kinds of skiing here. And just 100 miles north of me, they get over 200 inches of snow a year.

I would prefer the extra 6 weeks of summer that southwestern Wisconsin has, but then I would be too far from Lambeau Field.

Ok, I'll admit that the first 2 yrs here I hated the summers, and was begging for cold and snow. Went back up north Jan of '10, and that seems to have cured me. Air conditioning is a wonderful thing. :D

Winter makes Summer that much sweeter, memorable, and worth looking forward to.

Nope it wouldn't be the same - no winterizing, boating/fishing/beach/bikinis 24/7/365.

Lots are saying 'family and job' keeps them where they are. I can understand that, I guess.

The south also has 4 seasons, Need a jacket, Nice, Too Hot for comfort, and Hurricane season.

I'll take Hurricane Season over blizzard season. Both disable the population pretty equally, but hurricanes are fun!

As far as our high heat and humidity in the summer, keep in mind that everywhere we go, there is A/C, like in Phoenix or any other desert locale. I know with complete certainty that not every home or establishment in the north has A/C, but you guys still get 1-2 weeks of sweltering 100F+ weather, to which you have very little escape. Trade off I guess.

I'll take the 4-5 months of 90+ in exchange for the other 7 at 65-80F.

NY Giants and pizza...

Don't forget the bagels, too! But, where did all those old pizza makers go? They moved to Florida and opened shops here, so the pizza is pretty much the same (without the NY water, which does make it a little better), and unless you're going to every Giants/Jets/Patriots/Steelers/etc. game, we have the same games on the same cable/sat that you watch them on.

I just think of how about 30minutes after I started this thread, the girl (about 21) across the canal had a pool party with all her girlfriends in the middle of January, running around in teeny bikinis. I don't think anyone can argue that girls in overcoats look better! :D

Re: Question for you Northerners...

I saw this on a history channel show:
in the 40's before we had AC, the 10 largest cities were all north of Baltimore. Baltimore was like the southern most big city. And that's because it was just too unbearable to live any further south of there. We always had heat, but we just recently invented AC.
So when AC came around, the southern cities boomed. That's why Houston because so large.

Its like now you can have your cake and eat it too. the only issue preventing you from living down south has just been resolved.
But whining and moaning about hating where you live is just a ritual we have here in the northeast. Everyone i know swears up and down they are going to move out of MD. But they never do.

I think i would eventually get tired of summer, living in Fl.

Re: Question for you Northerners...

Why?
I complain a bit and don't like the (semi) cold winters in the northwest but I'd never give up family, friends, a great career and the incredible boating for more sunshine. I'm staying put. I enjoy heading south and the weather there but I love what I have here way more.
I (occasionally) complain about the weather so you don't think I'm too happy.

Where I live here in Montana, I have not seen a 100 degree day for several years, we didn't even have any 90 degrees the last couple of years. Also, there is just something about a cowgirl in tight wranglers with cowboy boots and long hair. Hmmmm

I think point is why remain somewhere you're miserable for which I can relate. However, jumping up & moving cross country is easier said than done. I did, but had an opportunity.

As for me I grew up in Louisiana so I don't mind heat & humidity. It's a welcome climate after traveling out west or up north.

Re: Question for you Northerners...

I was born and raised in the south. I went up to Michigan one time. Got there one afternoon was wearing a short sleeve shirt, felt a little coolness in the air. Got up the next morning it was misting rain, temperature was dropping, rain soon turned to sleet, roads iced over....all in less than 24 hours....I came back south.
I am curious, how much time do you fellas up there spend a year shoveling snow, chopping firewood, de-icing windshields ect. just to get thru the winter?
One of you fellas called us "sissies" down here in the south....well....this sissy is gonna put a cooler beside my hammock kick back and pop the top on another cold beer and swing in my hammock with 70+ degree weather this weekend :D:D if I don`t go fishing that is.
