Re: question of cost for stringer, floor and transom replacement

64......I contacted the one in cumberland... and if he still has it, it will be your fault I turn into a tinner! :)

"No name" thanks but those are just a little too far to drive.

If the one 64 posted pans out, then I'll forget about the other starcraft I was looking at that was 7.5 hrs away. I really don't want to drive that far not really knowing the condition of the trailer axle, etc... I can live with the style of Starcraft that 64 posted. Should be a good project and not a lot of cost behind it either. Thanks 64! Hope the guy still has it available, if he does I'm going to line up to look at it this weekend and may just bring it home!

I hope it works out, just trying to save you from the ITCH. :D

Wasn't there an old commercial, "You can thank me now, or thank me later." Forget the product.

Re: question of cost for stringer, floor and transom replacement

Well I've been kicking it around all day after 64osby posted those boat links and it's always come back to the "itch". I just really like the looks of the glasser I'm looking at, regardless of the 7.5 hours one way. I know I'd be kicking myself for not going after this boat just because of distance. I'll know by late this evening if I'm a starcraft glasser or not. If I don't get it, I'll continue to look for one like it, who knows maybe I'll find one with an I/O instead of a OB.

Sounds like you have resin in your veins. That's alright, go with it.

There's always room in the 'glassers dry dock for 1 more glutton for the punishing 'itch' that just needs a good scratching. :D

I looked around, cause I'm a 3rd grader & need pix, but I didn't find it. Hope you land a deal though, just the same.

They're all boats & they all float....... So, I'm always good if someone is willing to bring back a beauty, & that keeps her out of the landfill:cool:

Re: question of cost for stringer, floor and transom replacement

I'm back to looking again, closer to home. Thanks jb for your input!

If anyone knows of a "resin filled" Starcraft mid-seventies (I'd like a I/O but a OB would be fine too) around the VA, NC and MD area that's in the 500-600.00 range (I know...cheapster). please let me know. 16 to 18 ft is what I'm looking for. If there's another manufacturer who has built a hull like Starcraft's in design and you see one, please let me know. I'd like...like everyone else I'm sure, that the I/O be a Merc setup...OB I'm fine with Evinrude or Johnson, I've owned a few of them. This is going to be 75% a "weekend cruisin' ski boat" for the family and maybe 25% fishing.

Thanks in advance.

Starcraft's fiberglass boats were pretty average. I wouldn't specifically look for one over other brands.

Spoken like a true aluminum boat owner! Thanks! :p I see that you have your own nice collection of Starcraft's.

Re: question of cost for stringer, floor and transom replacement

Got a question about prepping "plank" style hull fiberglass. How do you go about sanding all the surfaces? Do you make a custom sanding block that's shaped like the steps on the planks? I have an appointment to see this boat in person this Sunday afternoon. Going to bring my camera along to take some photos of it's condition and would like to get some feedback from you all on here. This boat is going to take some major work, I highly doubt the floor/stringers/transom are going to be good on it. It's a 1965 that's been sitting outdoors for what seems to look like a long time and it's got a nasty paint job on it. But it is fairly rare so it deserves at least an inspection to determine if it's worth saving and restoring. I'll post up some photos Sunday evening.

Do you mean a lapstrake hull like this:

Sanding it is somewhat more complicated, but mostly just because there are so many more edges to be mindful of while sanding. Some lapstrake hulls seem to have crisper corners (trying to more closely mimic wooden boats) then others. And w/ all the extra edges, lots more opportunity for an oops w/ an electric sander. And your eye will notice the profile change in the lapstrakes. The good thing about a glasser is mix some PB & fill & reshape until rebuilt and almost everyone will never know.

Slow & steady, maybe even almost entirely by hand rather then random orbit sanders.

Check CC254's thread about removing paint down to original gelcoat. He's doing a great job. There are probably other references, and his is about anti-fouling paint, which by it's nature, is supposed to be particularly hard to remove. Hopefully any poorly done paint will be failing & easy to remove. It may have been painted for a reason though, crawl all over it looking for hidden patches, repairs, gelcoat damage and etc. Take an awl to probe suspect areas of deck/transom, screwdrivers & a couple of different stiffness/width scrappers/putty knives.

Happy hunting!

What happened to this 1? Owner ever call you back? That's a pretty good looker!

Nope. I figured he sold it and just never took the ad down. :(

But I did receive an email from a guy who wants to set something up for next weekend to look at another boat that's in my price range and it's a I/O too. I'll PM you the link. It's got issues (what wouldn't in my price range) but I'm getting some additional red flags with it from this guy's ad and looking at the photo...I'm sure you'll pickup on the red flags too, you were good at the one up North that I was looking at.

Re: question of cost for stringer, floor and transom replacement

jb,

Thanks for keeping an eye out for a project for me. It's too "new" and it's a cuddy but the price is very close.

I think I might have a boat lined up, just waiting for some additional information from the seller about the trailer tire size, hitch size and if it's got a title. Early 60's and the price is really in my parkball. I know it's a full restoration project. It looks like this design but it's an OB instead. http://www.4yachting.com/yacht_info.php?yid=106332

Good luck!
Post the successful buy pix here, then maybe start a rehab thread w/ correct title. For a # of days after you start a thread you can edit your first post & change the title I think. Whichever way suits you best..... After 10 days I think or a high # of posts to your thread, I don't think a title change will work....

Re: question of cost for stringer, floor and transom replacement

I'll have to post a new tread, can't change the title of this one. If all goes right I'll take photos of hooking it to my tow vehicle and the trip home with it, figure that would be a good start to the restoring thread. And I'm sure I'll have a ton of questions as I go along. I've been reading a bunch of restore threads, so much I can't even keep up with those that members are updating every day.
