Re: Quick Oil Question

Ok, it must have been something else that turned the oil into sludge... Whatever, I sold that POS a while ago so that's not an issue.
I wasn't trying to start a debate on weather or not to use synthetic, I always have and plan to keep doing it... The problem is I'm having a hard time finding synthetic SAE30 other than the Volvo brand that's $8.50 a quart, again the engine takes 9 quarts. I was really just curious if it really matters if I run 10W30 or not. I've never thought twice in my cars / trucks but boats run at a higher RPM so maybe that why I need SAE30??? I'm not an oil expert but I know I need to change mine and I'm sick of paying double for for Volvo oil...

Maybe you should reconsider your decision to stick with synthetic. I'd rather use "regular" HD-30 than synthetic 10w-30. A 5w-30 or 0w-30 (synthetic or not) would be even lower on my list. I suspect most here agree.

I looked for you, there is an autozone in Ft. Walton Beach (I believe that is near you) that has Castrol HD-30 for $4.29/quart. The website says it is "normally stocked at your local store" (I had Ft. Walton selected as my local store).

Actually, after reading the viscosity ratings of popular synthetic SAE 0w30, 5w30, 10w30 AND "regular" or synthetic SAE30..........

The Viscosity @ 100?C, cSt (ASTM D-445), is THE SAME. (which is really where it counts)

At extremely COLD temps, synthetics will flow when straight weight NON-synthetics are almost SOLID.

Since most of us don't boat in below freezing weather................ (um....the lake is frozen!!!!) and pleasure boats are not run enough during the boating season to "wear out" the oil...........

...............Synthetics are generally NOT needed.

YMMV...............

Cheers,

Rick

You'll be fine if you use the oil that I use.......

Quick Oil Question.... HA!
There should be an automatic "Oil Thread" filter here that takes you to the 10000+ other oil threads that ask the SAME questions!!

I would say based on my experience it makes more of a difference to use a straight 30 vs a mult vis than to use a syn vs regular oil....meaning that the benefit to your engine will be greater using the straight weight oil because it will stay in grade better than a conventional multi vis...
consider this, I have a 22 year old original engine...run in salt water at least 10 seasons of that...and running straight 30 Chevron Delo (not syn, conventional HD oil) it has a hot idle oil pressure of about 30 psi...which is good for a new engine let alone an old one....my concern is if you used a multi-vis it might thin out hot and you'd see this on the hot oil pressure readings...I would not worry about using syn oil in a maine inboard, just use one of the better straight 30 HD rated oils.....
