I've had both, the toyota will last longer and be less expensive to repair. My discovery was a great vehicle, but when the trans went out it was a very costly repair. just my 2 cents worth.

Without question, go with the Toyota 4-Runner. Everything I've read about the Range Rover products is that they are not recommended vehicles due to poor reliability. If you couple that with the Range Rover being very expensive to repair you may have your answer.
Something else to consider is that this company is on very hard times right now and is danger of folding and this might affect service and parts shortly.
Check on line to any consumer reports articles if you can, I'll think you will find your answer very quickly.
Good Luck and keep us posted on your choice.

The Toyota, hands down.

#3 daughter has a '98 4 Runner with well over 200K and it seems bulletproof.

If it is the 3.0L ask about the timing belt. It is the best insurance to keep that toyota on the road....... you would not be able to afford to keer the range rover on the road and that V-8 delivered the worst mpg in the industry!!

Go 4runner! My wife drives a 2000 and loves it.

... i'd go with the Land Rover (you said Ranger Rover however) but offer 4500. if it has maintenance records and was properly cared for it will keep going an going. its a rock crawler show of 4x4 force. i own the same year 98' disco LSE with 110K miles. its been an awesome vehicle. i tow my boat. camp in some crazy places. run in the worst weather in northen az. my friends toyota forerunner and tundra both have had costly problems with mileage at around 70K, 104K respectively. i had a spark plug wire go bad at 100K and the antifreeze reservior started to leak. replaced each myself. but like i said, keep the LR out of the dealership for routine stuff and order any parts online. most people dont understand LR and get intimidated to work on them and venture to guess that most folks have no experience driving them but comment on how expensive it is to have a LR dealership work on them. that is a true statement. but if you can do simple stuff access to items under the bonnet is so easy. i would say stay away from the 90's Range Rover. they are prone to air suspension failures.

good luck

Re: ranger rover or toyota

after i talked to her this morning she has added a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee to the mix.
here is the strange part. she checked insurance and of the 3 the land rover was the cheapest.
when i talked to her she told me she has a freind there in ss that has the same LR a little older and he could help her with maintance.
he loves his but all he uses it for is around town and taking to mountains there. he has a car for road trips.

bob; it says it a 3.4 6. i'm guessing that would ve a V-6??
is that good?
are the timing belts pretty much like any other to change and do you know if the have O tolerance valves so if the belt breaks you drop a valve?

i was considering a discovery and actually purchased a 1999 grand cherokee v8 4x4 with quadradrive front and rear lockers because it has more trail capability plus alot more power than the discovery. after all the discos i test drove they all had at least one known issue but it was mostly electrical issues(7). I love my grand and wouldn't trade it for most anything but a toyota if you dont care much about off road capability would be the best choice.

Re: ranger rover or toyota

I'm sorry yes I actually meant the 3.4 5VZ-FE.....same engine as mine. The timing belt and valve adjustments are the biggest maintenance blip in the schedule. It is not an interference engine so if the belt goes there will be no contact.

Along with the belt goes a whole bunch of other things .... tensioner and guide pulleys. Gates has a guide on their web site but that just tells you what you need. Pretty involved procedure.

It is an ugly job IMO and best left to the Toyota Tech (special tools etc) same as the valves.

If you need any info PM me..... I have a full set of shop manuals and electrical diagrams for the 2000 which is exactly the same as the 98.

Get the Toyota. Jeep and Range Rovers have the name, but Toyota has the quality. I do have to add, it does depend on previous use and previous owner.

We have a newer 4Runner and love it, but can't comment on those built in the late 90s except I know people who have owned them and loved them.

My only suggestion would be, if your daughter has some time, to wait a little while longer and see what else pops up. Some owners of these kinds of vehicles are fanatics about care and maintenance, and keep detailed records of such.

Yes, there are 4Runner people who will not allow rain drops to blemish their shiny black paint jobs.

TG you're partially right, almost 2/3...but never the Ford before the Toyota. :D
I'm thinking the equivalent in a Ford would be the little Bronco?
Inexpensive vehicle for sure, but not in the quality ballpark of the Toyota.:)
Either way, I agree with the take on the Range/Land Rover stuff....definitely for avoiding unless you have a lot of mechanical hard skills I think.
My two bits.

Even if the 4 Runner had 200K on it, I'd still buy it over a Land Rover. I wouldn't consider a Jeep (sorry guys, but Chryslers keep transmission shops in business).
