Re: Real World BOATING Brain Teaser

Fix it BEFORE I go out. Very seldom does a boat just quit without giving some kind of warning. Hard starting when hot or cold, missing at idle, low rpm, you name it. When it first starts doing something out of the ordinary, find out why. They always get you home after that. Plus the fact that when (not if) it doesn't start, I have the knowhow to fix it.
I used to go to some seriously remote spots. No VHF, no CB, no cell phones, and usually no other boaters. Just me, the wife and kitties, and the boat.

Oh, and before you ask, yes things broke at bad times, but I was always able to make it work enough to get home.

There are some folks, on this board, (Don S is one of them) that I believe could make a whole new powerplant out of: three flares, four coffee cups and an anchor.

So really in that case Bassboy had the best answer in his last post.

Although if you have a low battery and, it might not be all that low and it might be hard to tell. In other words you think the charge is good enough to start the boat but it aint. I have experienced this (more then once) being out on the boat in the middle of the lake with my brother and the battery would not fire the motor off, it just didn't have the juice. Thank goodness for the trusty Die Hard battery booster. I have one now also.

sneaky sneaky don..... but boats do break on occasion... (or else we'd be without a paycheck :) )
ign modules fry on the run, and fuel pumps quit.... true, 99% of things will hint before they go, but not everything.

I suppose on the little lakes I go to I could bypass the neutral safety switch and try to use the starter motor to spin the prop to get me heading toward shore. Even if I only spin it for 60 seconds at a time it's going to be hard on the starter though. And, I wonder if that would really get me any head way anyhow.
