Re: Really tough question

Well, removing the powerhead is a really big PITA job, with many fasteners guaranteed to break. I would remove the lower unit first. Work the shifter and check that the upper shift rod in the midsection goes up and down in the order that it should. Then move the shift rod in the gear case and see what that does. One of them has to be backwards. Only if the upper rod is working backwards would I then remove the powerhead to correct it. But since you insist that it wasn't touched, and I believe you, and considering that only the lower unit was changed, I would look to it for the answer.

I did not think it was possible to install lower unit parts backwards

Re: Really tough question

"after installing a lowerunit off another motor" means anything is possible. Some rubberhead may have "rebuilt" the gearcase and couldn't figure out why the cradle wouldn't go back in and "fixed" it. It's been a while since I had one apart, that's why I said it may not even be possible. I'm just saying that since the only thing that was changed was the gear case, that's probably where the issue is. But again, with the lower unit removed it is a simple task to verify if the upper and lower shifter rods are doing what they should.

Re: Really tough question

Yes but the motor i took the lower off of was a running motor Also till I started using it for parts and I can see that the shift rod is moving backwards In the leg so I assume the lever below the powerhead is reversed

Re: Really tough question

Yeah Thanks chinewalker said that previously and it does when I put the shifter in forward the rod goes up and opposite for reverse But the prop still spins the opposite way it's suppose to

Turning the driveshaft CLOCKWISE (looking from top), pulling UP the rod, prop shaft should turn CLOCKWISE (RH) looking from behind.

Re: Really tough question

just to add more confusion to this perplexing problem......it sure looks like ( from the diagram) that "up" on the shift rod should move part#11 to engage reverse (part#7), and down on the shift rod should engage fwd.( part# 43). ??

Re: Really tough question

Any chance you still have the original lower unit? There's a lot to be said for side-by-side comparisons.

Interesting. If I were closer I would give your LU a spin on my motor.
edit: Well, at least take a look at it anyway.

Re: Really tough question

how about the engine to lower is the correct rotation as in part #35 was installed correctly Johnson, Evinrude & OMC Parts - MIDSECTION - 1985 Johnson/Evinrude 30. would it be possible to put the throttle cam on backwards or some other part so the carbs will not open when the engine thinks its in reverse when it in forwards? this is a tiller motor and not cable remote as that makes a big diffrence and the site i use quotes parts for both on this year/model.

any chance of some pictures.....thats would realy help to see what you have

Re: Really tough question

sry forgot to ask what year the lower came from as there was something in the forums about swapping the real old lowers with the more modern heads that could lead to it being reversed. i never understood what that was about and it was on a larger engine but just in case do you know what year the donor came from?

Re: Really tough question

This motor is cable throttle not tiller I don't know the specific year of the engine it's off but it's 1980 or newer because in 79 they still used a oval opening on this model I think it's even newer I looked at the serial no when I had it and it was a 30 hp they went to that after propshaft ratings so the 35 turned into a 30 I don't think you could install it in neutral unless you unthreaded the shift rod to make it longer or shorter then it would not move through the full range
