Replacing Shift Shaft Seal, How do I find the parts?

I have a '91 Mariner V200, S#0D038776. I was seeing a little oil from the front ports while it was sitting. Based on the Marine Doctor's recommendation, I am planning to replace the shift shaft seal. I pulled the lower unit and it looks like he was right. The only oil showing anywhere was right there where the shift shaft and the speedo pickup is. When I drained the oil, no water seemed to come out so I assume it must not have been leaking too bad, but better to fix it now than when it does cause problems. Now I just need to find the parts. While I am at it, I am going to replace the impeller. I was looking at a couple sites and I can't figure out which parts to buy. My serial number listed above there does not seem to fall into the ranges they list, unless I am reading them wrong. The range I think it would fall into on the sites start with D082000. At least that is the only one that I see that starts with D. Anyway, does anyone know a good place to buy the parts and which parts I need? I assume I can get the impeller as a kit. The shift shaft seal I am not sure about. I suspect I need a special tool for that too.

Thanks!
Mike

hello
I am sure on of the Iboats mods will tell you. I dont know if Iboats sells the tool but they are avalible. buy the bushing/seal assy and life is easy. its the same for many many years as is the upper water pump housing kit. just a note. if any of the plastic housings/bases show any signs of melting they must be replaced
good luck and keep posting

Re: Replacing Shift Shaft Seal, How do I find the parts?

Thanks guys! It just crossed my mind to check the local Carquest Autoparts dealer and they actually ordered the parts for less than I could find on the internet. I wasn't so worried about the price, but I liked the idea of getting the parts locally so if I order the wrong thing I can return it. You don't know how much "junk" I have laying around that I got off the internet and it wasn't what I was expecting. For that matter, I hate to return things anyway so I have a lot of stuff from local stores. I'd probably be a lot better off being a lot less of a do-it-yourselfer, but it is fun anyway. The car parts store couldn't find the tool so I'll have to order that somewhere. I think I'll replace the trim tab while I'm at it since it seems to be really deteriorated.

Okay, I get chatty at night, but anyway, thanks guys for your replies!

Mike

Any seals that are put into the gearcase must be SST.

TMD

You probably already know this, but I thought I'd post it anyway. Just incase. You can look up/order parts directly from B&M marine at www.mercruiserparts.com.They have a great setup, and all parts are refrenced by actual Mercury part numbers.
