Trying to get a 1956 Johnson Javelin 2 stroke 30 hp going. I just purchased this and the seller showed it running. But so far I've not been able to get it going. I bought 2 new spark plugs today and noticed when attaching the wires to them that one wire didn't "click" when inserted over the plug. I then noticed the rubber cap over the end was loose and it slide off to show the wires all bunched up in a little ball and that's what was supposed to be making the connection to the plug! So I definitely need to replace the spark plug wires but don't know if I have to buy them specifically for a marine engine or if I can get replacements at an auto parts store? Also I noticed when trying to start the motor several times this afternoon, when I unhooked the battery to take it inside and recharge it, the negative cable was rather warm. Is that normal? Thank you!

A battery cable should never be hot. That means there is high resistance which is caused by loose or corroded cables. You need to clean them (as in shiny bright) and then install them tightly. That means both ends of both cables. Looking at them doesn't count. Disassemble the connections.

Where the battery cables connect to the battery posts, all is clean and shiny, including the brand new battery. So are you saying I need to look into where the cables lead up and connect to the engine itself?

Yes clean the connections on the engine end; if the wires still get warm or hot you may have corrosion in the wires themselves and they will need to be replaced. As for spark plug wires if you have a NAPA store close by they will be able to help you cause you do need marine grade copper wire and the connector that go with them.

Just so you know in 1956 Johnson motors with electric start were 6 volt. If you are using a 12 volt battery thats the reason for hot wires.

Google Ohms Law.
It explains why using a 12 volt battery will result in less heat in the wires.
