Some of those are not meant for 2-stroke, so obviously just keep reading when you get to one of them.

Boobie, I checked the gate and it does fully clear the nozzle when in forward.

Given your less than charitable comments about the PO , maybe add to your list a carb R&R to check that they are the right config..
If I am correct, those carbs are used on a few models and HP, with a few different jet combos.
I've seen lots of incorrect jets installed in carbs "somehow".
You can't assume anything is correct in those carbs, really.

Thank you, it was just a shot in the dark. Seen that prob with other jet boats.

Tim you might be correct. Anything can happen since it was built and the PO didn't sound to sharp.

Abomb, just had another thought. Could you have something clogging up the exhaust?? Have heard of that happening too. In fact it happen to me one down here in FL on an outboard. Found the exhaust housing was jammed up with weeds and crap.

Yeah....there was a guy with a 9.9 that had that problem. Was driving him crazy.
Never did figure out whether that was the PO rejetting incorrectly or if he had just swapped out the whole carb.
Someone in here has/had a great sig....something like "Just because you found it this way doesn't mean it's SUPPOSED to be this way".
Words to live by.... :)

I like that saying Tim. I will to be on the safe side size all the jets and compare to the manual. The only way I know how to size them would be to pass a drill bit through it and when I find one that's snug that's the size. I know that the high speed jets were the same, but like you said could be four of the wrong ones. Boobie I thought that also, I do get a puff of smoke from where the muffler bolts to the adapter, tightened the bolts and it helped some. I replaced the bellows I guess you would call them, and when they were off I couldn't see any buildup.

Another example of what I had to deal with from the PO he must found any old boat starter cut the mounting brackets off of it wedged it in where it should be and continued to crank the bolts till one stripped and the others weren't even close to lining up.

When the link and sync is done, the idle timing, idle RPMs, and full advanced timing all will fall right in place. But you can`t adjust one without adjusting or check the other. You have to following the steps in the manual.

Also check the plastic rollers page 1-30 fig 3 and fig 6. When new they had clear plastic cover over the roller. If missing on roller in fig 3 , causes the timing to wander, can be repaired with clear plastic tubing from hardware store. If missing on roller in fig 6 link and sync will be off some what.

I don't have the clear tubing on the rollers, and the roller inside the cam should have it also? Looking at manual now. Thanks Clanton.

Re: Retarding timing to gain wot rpms

I was replacing the leaf springs on my boat trailer because they were rusted and I wanted to change the hardware to stainless steal, so while I had it apart I decided to do the wheel bearings took it all apart and realized I had the wrong size bearings. So I have to wait till Sunday to put the boat in the water and try all the tweaks. Then I will post results.

Re: Retarding timing to gain wot rpms

ok so I want to thank everyone for the great advice it really helps to look at a problem from many different perspectives. so I want to post my follow up. I know most people fix there problems and don't have courtesy enough to post there outcome for the people that have been following and helping the thread. So I placed the clear tubing on the carburetor roller made big difference. I backed the trailer into the water and checked wot it was at 34?btdc I adjusted it to 28? btdc the factory specs. I could immediately tell the difference. I took it for a ride and was running at 5100 rpms and 36 mph but I was running in some choppy water and a steady breeze. off every wave the boat would hit 5800 rpms before coming back into the water, so I backed off the throttle when I hit a wave. but I believe it will run 5500 rpms and 40 mph on a calm day. Thanks everyone for the help.
