Hi to all,

1981 johnson 70hp, mod#J70ELCIM; ser#J5479196

Replaced water pump then went into stat area.

Oem manual calls for a p/n382385 but dealer says it's superceded with a p/n396987. I bought the unopened pack with the stat p/n396987, opened it and the actual stat has a p/n397056 printed on it ? Seems like it may be the wrong stat.

Also the old stat was metal and it looks like the actual passage is larger that the new stat. The new stat is a thick brown plastic stat and the passage looks like it would pass less water when open than the old stat.

I lubed the old stat and it slides on the little metal rod smoothly now, I plan to check it in hot water. I think the old one would be better than the new one if it works.

I didn't have temp. problems I was just updating the pump and stat.

Any info. would be appreciated.

396987 is indeed the correct stat. Not sure about the number on the Stat, as it does not come up as a valid number. You may want to question the dealer about it. There were changes made in some Stat designs along the way, but best to be sure...

part# 397056 is probably a production only number...I punched into 2 different parts catalogs and it doesn't come up as a good number..and I don't have a 396987 in stock to look at but the supersession chain is correct8)
