True that there are no guarantees, but I think folks are forgetting that we are all driving around on used tires - our own.

???

Yes we are all driving around on "used tires" but they are not from 1989, with separating tread and unsafe to drive on.

I don't have a problem with used tires, but to a certain age, tires that are 21 years old are not safe to drive on.

Additionally, where I live, there are a lot of used tires available, because the former owner replaced them with different tires that are larger, or are part of a low profile set that requires new rims too, etc.

As the saying goes, "there are used tires and there are used tires."

???

I do agree with what I refer to as "take off tires" (less than 500 miles on them) we do this alot at dealerships and employees usually snatch them up , myself included.

Re: Ripped Off!!!

There are "takeoff rims" too. I hit a piece of metal (angle iron, I think) one night, while driving on an interstate in Louisiana. I didn't see the darn thing until the last second and by then, it was too late to avoid it. The tire blew immediately and the rim was bent.

I went to my local Chevy dealer to price a stock aluminum alloy rim. After I picked myself off of the floor when told the price, I left and went to a rim and tire shop. The owner sells lots of used rims and tires, which he takes off of cars that he puts the new stuff on. So, instead of paying close to $500 for a rim, I bought a used rim that had been checked for cracks, etc. The used rim cost me $175.

So, if you should replace your tires after six years because they are dangerous, who is thinking about the spare? Shouldnt that be replaced also???

Most people don't think about the spare tire until its too late. But it's not exposed to the sun's damaging rays like the main tires are. My dad had some old trailer tires for his pontoon boat trailer. They were made in probably 1984 but were kept in a storage shed out of the sun for 25+ years and Armorall'ed too. He put them on the trailer and they're fine. Just last summer he pulled the boat out of the water and to the repair shop on them and they worked fine. We wouldn't take them on the interstate but 25mph to the boat place is fine.

I work in the automotive industry as a Service Director , A few years ago the government released a report in cooperation with tire manufacture testing that stated any tire over 6 years old was dangerous . You can fail state inspection for "dry rot" cracks in your tires . Also tires are not like used cars , People get rid of tires with good tread for a reason !
Remember that you can always get "off brand" new tires at a very low cost to get by on ... They may wear out in 2 years but they can get you by . ALOT cheaper that a used tire blow out and incurring dammage !

If this is the case then my 2002 Mercury with 3200 original miles needs new tires? The car leaves the garage maybe four or five times a year, the tires and the rest of the car are like new. The tires on that car are fine, they are not dryrotted, worn, or otherwise.
Its bad enough that it cost me $1500 per year in insurance and registration fees, now they want to add the cost of new tires every 6 years, which in my case is about 2800 miles or so, often less. The same goes for my two trucks, which I have, I average only a few hundred miles per year. The tires on my 1995 Dodge van are original with only 5700 miles on them. I can't see a set of 8 ply 16" tires with 5700 miles which are garage kept being degraded to the point of hazard.

I would understand if they were old half worn out or dryrot cracked tires but these look new. I also don't ever recall them checking anything other than tread depth for inspection either. It's just not on the pass/fail sheet.

.

Same here...I've got some old vehicles with old tires on them that still look great. I bought the tires on my Mustang in 1992. They have about 5k miles on them. We have a 1977 Ford truck that got new tires in 1985. They still look like new. The truck only has 41k miles on it.....I'll drive either one of them without any fear of a blow out.............Yeah, I know somebody is gonna tell me they are rotten and I can't see the damage.
