Riser Replacement

I bought a 1998 270 Sea Ray with a 454 and Bravo III outdrive about 6 months ago. I have been having trouble with overheating. I started troubleshooting with the cheap stuff (thermostat, then sea water pump impeller, then hoses, etc.) and have moved towards the expensive end. I am left with nothing left to replace but the risers. I have always heard "risers". On my engine there are three major components on each side. In addition to the risers, wich are short spacers over each exhaust manifold, there are also a set of elbows (one for each side).

My question is this: should I just replace just the "risers" or should I replace all 3 - the risers, exhaust manifolds, and elbows?

Re: Riser Replacement

Hi
On my V8 I've just had to change my manifold spacers and risers (elbows).
I had heating problems with especially one side getting red hot. If you find that the riser is blocked then the rest will probably be as well. If you don't change them then eventually they will crack, with the water then entering your engine with the obvious result. I'ts not worth the risk and is not technically difficult to change them.
Where abouts are you as i had to purchase in Rip Off U.K. whilst the Americans (lucky buggers), can buy at a fraction off the price.

Re: Riser Replacement

Spike,

I'm in the U.S., and the prices are higher than I would like, but I'm not complaining if you had to be them in the U.K. - ouch.

I haven't disassembled it yet; I don't like to leave it completely undriveable while awaiting parts, so I prefer not to start pulling apart until I have replacement parts in hand. To be safe I guess I should just go ahead and order all 3 components for each side - the manifolds, the spacers (risers), and the elbows.

Does anyone know the advantages of ceramic over galvanized components for salt water use? I found a web site that had galvanized exhaust manifolds for almost half the price of the standard ceramic coated components. I wonder if they are that much better?

If you are in salt since 98 with them, replace ALL! Way over due...I just use plain old cast iron, and run a Saltaway flush after use..search ebay for fredwarner1 .. super deal for Man's
