Re: Saddam captured

Just caught it on Fox News.

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Without a single shot being fired, U.S. military forces captured former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein as he hid in the bottom of a hole in a home near Tikrit, officials announced at a Baghdad press conference.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we got him," L. Paul Bremer (search), the U.S. administrator in Iraq, announced.

Officials showed a videotape of the former Iraqi dictator and most-wanted figure by the U.S.-led coalition as he was being inspected following his capture. He had a long black-and-grey beard and unkempt hair.

About 600 U.S. troops took part in Operation Red Dawn, said Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez (search), the top American general in Iraq. Two other Iraqis were captured along with Saddam, who was found with $750,000 in U.S. currency, Sanchez said.

Sanchez said he had no idea how long Saddam had been at the Tikrit location and could not say if anyone had stepped forward to claim the multi-million dollar reward for his capture.

"Today is a great day for Iraq and the Iraqi people," Sanchez said.

Saddam is talkative and is being cooperative, Sanchez said. He is being held at an undisclosed location.

Fox News Story

Re: Saddam captured

I aggree that it's a shame that he will now have to stand trial instead of getting what he deserves.

Re: Saddam captured

An Iraqi court may well give him what he deserves. Let's hope for that.

The so called "resistance fighters" now have their main objective taken away.

Please remember that even after Hitler was known to be dead, Nazi die-hards continued terror attacks on U.S. troops and German collaborators for almost 2 years. Big differrence: The media didn't give them an inch of coverage.

It probably isn't the end, but it is surely one more big step toward the end.

Thanks and blessings to our President and our troops. Persistence shall prevail. :)

What a great day! The Butcher has been caught and now he will soon begin to sing about the WMDs, France, Russia, Germany, etc, etc. Chirac must be peeing his pants!

WooHoo! What a Christmas present! Bin Laden is next!

Funny what cowards the "leaders" turn out to be. They ask people to give their lives for the cause and then are found like animals hiding in holes! Maybe this will wake up the Muslim world once and for all!

Ps - I'm baaaaaaaaack........

Re: Saddam captured

It is great they caught Saddam.

I would just caution those that somehow think that all is well in Irqq now that I would not celebrate just yet.

All the fundamentals are still in place. There are three divergent tribes all vying for power in the new Iraq--they have little in common exept they all don't want western influence--most of them are led by clerics who more than likely want some sort of religious based government, and none of them are inclined to compromise. And power corrupts.

On top of that, there is no other government in the region that particularly wants a democracy to succeed.

Saddam was captured in a hole in the ground. It is hard to believe that he was coordinating the whole resistance effort from that hole, and it could well be that little will be different now that he is captured.

I am, however, glad he is captured--it is a psychological victory, if nothing else. Let's hope we get Osama some day.

Re: Saddam captured

I understand the reason they want to try him for war crimes and uncover the identities of other party members , but am concerned about the aftermath of capturing him alive will be.

Either way congrats to our troops!!! Now lets get OBL.

Yes, I agreee...

Hope he isn't turned into a marter.

Same with Osama. I think he shouldn't be found dead or alive. Either way could spell trouble.
Dead, he's a marter. Alive... He defied the USA and fuels the resistance.

H.

GREAT--Thank You Special Forces of The United States Military--Most Excellent--

--now, lets get Osama--

--and--thanks Plywoody for going negative by posting supositions and "what ifs"----and, no, sadam insane was not operating exclusivly from "that hole". Please gather what info you can via whatever sources you rely on before commenting.

--lets hope that media will report the unedited press releases, films, vidieos, etc. Been watching this on and off on MSNBC--so far looks fair and good.
