Is it bad that I like the safety cans? Mine dont spill at all...I like it! Its easier to get the can positioned in an odd place without the gas coming off, then I just push the button and fill her up!

Re: Saftey Gas Cans - Messy Frustration

I own 2 gas cans and they are both just before this safety can mess started. I will hang on to them for as long as I can. There has to be cans for pouring antifreeze or something else that doesn't need the safety features but is compatible with gas??

The safety cans are not mandated in all 50 states. It was a wacky CA thing, that just migrated. If you can drive to a neighboring state that doesn't subscribe to the law, you can buy the "old" version can, or even buy the old spout by itself.

Or, look on E-Bay. I bought several spouts a couple of years ago, and they had no problem shipping it to my safety mandated state.

Drilling a big hole on the top corner (opposite from the spout) and using a rubber or cork stopper will serve as an excellent vent and solve the "pouring by the teaspoon problem". I have the same safety cans from Home Depot, but I use them for filling up lawn equipment. I have the old-style 5 gallon cans for the jet ski.

oops looks like they went up a little bit since I bought mine:

Made in the USA!

There has to be cans for pouring antifreeze or something else that doesn't need the safety features but is compatible with gas??

I notice the ones Tahorover listed do not say they are for gas anywhere (even though one of the pics appears to show one filling a gas tank). I knew someone would find non-gas, gas cans ;)

Is there a regulation that gas cans have to be red?? I've never seen them in any other color.

I know there is a law on the books that I can't transport full gas cans in my trunk. I have never done it any other way but at least I understand that gas vapor in my trunk is no different than gas vapor in our bilge. Let it collect and BOOM!!

I needed a small can (1 gallon) to refuel the Honda genny I recently bought which I keep on the swim platform when in use. I originally purchased the previously mentioned product at Home Depot and it never got to the boat after I tried it out at home. (major PITA). I then went to Wal-Mart and purchased the brand they offer and was much happier with it's design and usability. You twist the collar to prepare it for use and then tip the spout to the fill cap of your fuel tank. There is a catch hook on the gas can spout that catches the lip and you press forward to start the gas flow. It has worked well in my application. Granted - I'm only using a small can so your opinions may vary.

Oooo, that style almost worse than the spring loaded type. Lift 40lb fuel can with right hand, pull switch with left hand, depress lever with right thumb, continue to hold heavy fuel can as it piddles out fuel by the teaspoon, lever breaks mid pour, ignite fuel can, run.

Who designed these things?
Same guy that designed the 1 gallon flush toilets that need to be flushed 3 times.

ok something that i didnt read yet about those "d@m safty gas cans" i would say they are MORE dangerous, mine doesnt vent out during the day so it gets bloated and when i release it i get 50 mph winds flaring fumes into the air. i am afried one of these days it will blow apart and there will be $20.00 of gas on the ground. i have been thinking about putting a nail in it that way it wont bloat up like a week old deer on the interstate.

Is there a regulation that gas cans have to be red?? I've never seen them in any other color.

my uncle has a yellow one he uses for desiel fuel not sure if that helps and not sure were he got it.

I have some of these, $40:

The funnel slips over the neck in a second, very handy.

I also have some plastic ones, cheap. Just drilled a hole opposite the spout and put a valve stem into it.
Remove the stem from the outside, put the cap on it. Make a nice little vent.

Just slip up over the line and pick up your cans in Canada, they are still normal here. :)

I have over the years gotten 5 gallon cans like you get for K-1 they are translucent plastic, the caps have a place to conect a hose fitting, use a quick diconect to attach hose, fit a small quick disconect fitting opposite side that can be covered with a red plastic cap. I paint a Red patch on each can so marked for gas (stupid law). Or the do sell a large refule tank at west marine.

I'd like to thank RhythmsDJs again for his suggestion of the VP Racing fuel jugs. The three I ordered arrived yesterday and they are REALLY nice! Fueling will be much easier and much less messy now.

You get what you pay for and IMO plastic is not a material for a gas can!

Answering my own question.... this one looks pretty tempting http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200447900_200447900 certainly pricey but maybe worth it in the frustration department.

I have one of those and they're a PITA, the "coiled" spout leaks.

I also have one of these and they're the best darm can you can buy IMO.

No problem, happy I can help. Believe me, I understand the frustration and was glad to find them myself.
