Re: sea ray 176 vs bayliner 175

To address the 3.o issue of not enough power, that depends on how fixed you are on the maximum speed. If you want to run the boat at wide open throttle most of the time then you'll be happier with a bigger engine. However, you will need to feed the hungry monster!

Given the use you are expecting, the 3.0 will be fine and much more economical. The best performance add-on that you could do is Trim Tabs or Smart Tabs. Especially for skiing! Do a search on These two items.

Re: sea ray 176 vs bayliner 175

Okay, what am I missing here??

There are many reviews on the Bayliner 175 who say it is an awesome boat, that gives tremendous value. This is not a cheap boat, but is inexpensive. It is put together very well and rides excellent, even in open seas with 2ft. swells!

I recently went shopping as I am facing a similar decision, and the Glastron and Maxum were both 2-3k more, with less features!! ie, Bayliner 175 comes with carpet, stereo, wake board tower, extra storage space, etc. The Glastron doesn't even have an option for carpet and looks really bare. The only thing the Glastron had over the Bayliner was a bench seat in the back, which I don't care for, and certainly wouldn't pay an extra 2k for!!

Face it all you expensive boat owners, you are putting down the Bayliner name to convince yourselves you didn't over-pay. The bayliner is less expensive because they have mastered the manufacturing process by reducing labour costs. And so what if its put together in Mexico?? So is the Cadillac! If it reduces costs and gets me into an excellent boat at 2-3k less than other boats, than I am in favor!!

Another bayliner topic!!!!!!!!!!!. If they are around the price buy the searay. If you decide to unload you will sell it faster, and get more your investment back.(the searay has already depreciated, the bayliner hasn't).If you have your mind set getting new, sounds like a good deal on a decent boat with the bayliner.THIS IS NOT A KNOCK ON BAYLINER!!!!!!!!!!!

;) Jim

Re: sea ray 176 vs bayliner 175

I just received my Bayliner 175 and she sits in my garage as I speak. I don't know what people were talking about when they were saying that Bayliner is cheap... this boat is of high quality!! One look at the full console with the classy gauges and the overall finish and you can tell this is a good boat. Construction is solid, no obvious cutting corners on this boat. Anyone considering spending 10,500 on a boat with Wakeboard, Stereo, and nice graphics... you won't be disappointed with the Bayliner 175!!

As a comparison, for more money you could opt for the cheesy looking Glastron 175 MX... that thing looks like a converted fishing boat and comes with zero features.

Re: sea ray 176 vs bayliner 175

peevuto K cook and others who bash the glsatron line need to compare the glastron SX to the sea ray and bayliner. The MX is a cheap stripped down verison of the SX which to me i find to be a cheap boat. i own a 2005 glastron sx 170 which is the outboard version of the 175, and i feel that this boat is everything but cheap. the seats are of high quality vinal and the look great w/ the color matching scheme, the gauges are all stainless steel made by faria, it has VEC constuction which we all know is a superior boat building process offering a lifetime warrenty on the hull, stringers, transom, floors and deck, it has snap on carpet which is nice for cleaning and appearance, it comes with a custom matching easyloader trailer, and a good stereo system as well. so for any of you who think of comparing a glastron to a bayliner, i suggest you take a second look at the SX. here are some pictures to maybe help change some peoples minds on the looks and quality of glastron boats.
Re: sea ray 176 vs bayliner 175

That is a sweet looking boat..

I have a 17ft Searay with the 3.0 and am very happy with it. Certainly there are times when more power wold get me on plane quicker with a larger load but it is a sacrifice that I am will to make for economy.

Although my searay is an 87, I love it. It has a very good ride and is appointed well. My 18 y/o boat has its original upholstery and carpet and is still in excellent condition.

If it is choice between the two and the SR has power steering as someone above mentioned, go with the power steering. You will not regret that one.. Mine has it and it is an additional selling point if and when I want to sell it.

Hahaha, all these Bayliner VS Searay "experts" who have never owned a Bayliner! Searays are ten times as good...ooooohhh! More stainless steel....ahhhh!

Come on guys, they're all boats, they're all good and they're all fun. Don't pretend to be an expert because of something you heard or read about.

That 2005 Glastron SX looks like a sweet boat, good luck with it. The interior and dash look very similiar to my 185. I always enjoy reading comments from bashers who dont show us thier boat, or have never stepped foot on a bayliner but feel the need to bash bayliners. Yours looks like a great boat... Enjoy

John

Very Happy with My 185 4.3L 2004 Bayliner
http://mysite.verizon.net/vzenyisu/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/solo.jpg

Re: sea ray 176 vs bayliner 175

Here's my take. For less than the price of a 20ft Searay with a V6 I was able to get a 22ft Bayliner with the MPI V8. Going Bayliner allowed me to move up in size over the Searay, making me feel safer for my small children. Going with the V8 allowed me to have much more fun when it comes to water sports. Sure, it's not as fancy as my friends boats. I'm also not as much of a freak about wear and tear on my boat as them. Sure, Bayliner's wear down faster, because they're choosen by familys wanting to have fun, not someone concenred about a name, or the resale value (it's a boat, they're values all drop like a rock :) ). Thats my two cents. In the end, everyone picks to come out on my boat, as we have more fun, more room, and less worries :)

Re: sea ray 176 vs bayliner 175

They are both mass-production boats sold by the same parent company (for some time now). Although built in separate plants, their manufacturing methodology has become quite cross-bred by now.

Sea Ray at one point was the cream of the crop, and Bayliner was the pits.

But we have now come to the point that there is very little difference between the two (read the stuff about all the gelcoat disasters in some recent SeaRay models), but perception dies hard and that allows them to price SeaRay higher than they probably need to, and forces them to sell Bayliners for less than they would like to. They make money on balance. Recent data cited earlier would also tend to support that the resale value gap is closing fast. Used boat buyers are a good quality barometer, IMHO.

And also IMHO, I wouldn't buy either brand if you need a serious go-in-the-ocean boat - they are both below average.....

Re: sea ray 176 vs bayliner 175

I have owned a 1998 Bliner 1750 for a couple of years now. I am very satisfied and have no complaints, as it is a very economical boat to purchase and maintain. Dependability has been great and we can run all weekend on a tank. Both interior and exterior has held up well and cleans up really nice. Enjoy!

Re: sea ray 176 vs bayliner 175

We picked up a new Bayliner 185 this May, with the 3.0. This boat is a little heavier than the 175, but it gets up and goes and we have no regrets about the 3.0 in terms of power, and fuel economy… especially the latter. We sprung for the extra 2000.00 over the 175 simply because of the wider beam and extra space… I would think that the 175 would fly!

This is a super nice boat. We plan on keeping her, and we are very pleased to have gotten such a great boat at such a great price.

We didn’t get the boat for social status. We got it for fun, sun, and good times.

Re: sea ray 176 vs bayliner 175

Here we go again ! Why is this so hard to figure out? If the school district your kids go to means something, if the neighborhood your house is in "says" something about you, if a Lexus or Mercedes "trumps" anything that chevrolet or Cadillac can build....you need a Sea Ray ! If you honestly believe that a 1987 bayliner is doing the same boating as a Carver 53 Voyager....by all means...buy the Bayliner. A boat, just like anything else in life "say's" something about the people who own it. If you tend to buy the cheapest, most affordable car...or home...or clothes....get a Bayliner, or Rinker or Maxum. If you have to have quality or at least a "status symbol" then you need a Sea Ray, Cruisers, Carver, or ?? Regardless of what boat brand you have, there is someone in something that cost twice as much that thinks your boat is a toy. Ask any Hatteras owner what they think about Carver. Ask any Sonic owner what they think abot Baja, ask any Fairlane owner what they think about Sea Ray ? Buy the boat that "grabs you", that you can afford. Have fun, and worry about what other people think just as much as you worry about what "they" think of your house, car and clothes.

Re: sea ray 176 vs bayliner 175

Well after hearing that… Trying to outdo (or join) the neighbors, as a means for buying a 2004 (not 1998) boat, also tells you about the person and those people… snobs, who’d look down on you no matter what you had… and unless you are a snob too, you’d not like being around them anyway… therefore it would be stupid to figure status into your decision process if what you are looking to buy the boat for, is fun and reliability.

The Original Poster was taking about skiing and tubing with a small family, for fun, and easy trailering. For a one year older boat, and 1000 more, he could get the sea ray with the exact drive train (one year older).

There have been plenty of Bayliner enthusiasts here… whose underwear it just as clean if not cleaner, and whose homes, cars, and talents are all over the spectrum. And the two boats in question here are going to perform very likely the same. .. and most of us we grabbed the most boat for the money and live on to tell about it with big fat smiles on our faces! So because of our big fat smiles, we like to see others with big fat smiles…. Simple as that.

Good Luck!
