Im working on a new fuel system install and I have a few barb fittings that I need to seal. Is it safe to use a 3M scotchweld gasket maker adhesive to seal the threads? The tube says it is gas and oil resistant.
If NPT fittings were designed NOT to leak all the plumbing in your house that uses these fittings would not need pipe dope but they do by code in most areas. Any sealant you use that is gas and oil resistant would be a good bit of insurance since most of the fittings today come from gosh awful manufacturers in some offshore plant where quality control is very questionable.
I'd use that white teflon pipe thread dope/sealant...no teflon tape, as it can come apart like tiny "threads" of teflon, totally inert and capable of plugging any part of your fuel system.
What happens to dope if it enters the fuel system?
Not saying you're wrong, but I've never used anything BUT teflon tape on water and fuel fittings. Like everything else, there'a right and wrong way to use it. It needs to be placed carefully so that none of the tape extends past the threads, and only 2-3 turns of tape around the threads. If that doesn't seal it, there's a problem with the fitting.
Yes all of my fittings are tapered, I think. They got tighter as I threaded them in so Im guessing they are.
So tapered fittings are guaranteed not to leak without anything sealing the threads?
I was told not to use teflon tape b/c gas dissolves it and it gets into the system
The reason not to use pipe tape is the problem with tiny threads contaminating the fuel system WHEN YOU REMOVE THE TAPE-THREADED FITTING, not when it is first installed.
