Sears Gamefisher overheating problems

Hi, I have a 1982 sears gamefisher 9.9 hp engine and I have some overheating problems. I just replaced the gaskets and sprayed a high pressure hose through
the cooling passages and cleaned them out. It runs fine and water shoots out of the telltale at idle to half throttle in drive, but when you go any faster it stops shooting water and is replaced by steam out
of the telltale. I think that somehow water isn't getting sucked up through the pickups for some reason at this faster speed, which is probably like 20. When I checked out the pickup holes on the lower unit they were clean and you could see through them.
Any other ideas on how to fix this problem.
Thanks Alot,
Matt

Re: Sears Gamefisher overheating problems

It was just replaced and we re-inspected it and all was well.

Any other ideas?

It seems to have plenty of pressure even at high rpm in neutral. But go to those same rpms under power and the flow seems to stop.

One theory I have is that the extra heat generated under power is boiling the water in the cooling chambers and the steam pressure is overcoming the pump pressure, but it seems that the exhaust passages are quite large compared to cooling water inlet so I really can't imagine that would be the case.

Another theory is that turbulence or cavitation or something is distubing the flow into the pickups at the higher speeds. That would explain why in nuetral at high RPM all is well.

Help!!!

Thanks

Are you running this in a barrel or on a boat?

Re: Sears Gamefisher overheating problems

I have the same problem! After my merc. 9.9 went down this weekend I pulled the old 9.9 gamefisher out of storage and fired it up on the stand and everything seemed ok. I put it on the boat and when I was running at full throttle the motor got hot and all I was doing was pushing steam out the back. I don't know if I stopped moving water or if I was "cooking" it off. I took off the lower unit and the impeller seems fine. My questions are;
1. How strong of a stream do these motors put out? At low speed my water output looks like someone pouring out a glass of water.
2. Besides the impeller, are there any other parts of the water pump that do anything? The water pump for my 15 hp Johnson just seems like a housing for the impeller and nothing else. If I visually inspect the impeller and it seems fine should I still change the water pump and impeller?
3. Do these motors have thermostats and where are they located on the engine?

Re: Sears Gamefisher overheating problems

I was just getting ready to post the same question until I saw this post. I just bought a Gamefisher 9.9 and when I hooked it to the hose and ran it I noticed the telltale water that was coming out was really hot. There was plenty of water coming out but it was like described above. The water was pouring out. Is that normal, for that motor? I aslo took the little plate that covers the telltale and noticed a small round metal piece that actually looks like a thermostat? Can anyone confirm this. Thanks.

Found this doing a search on this board.

----The 9.9 Gamefisher motor is a Force motor. The output from the two holes will never be anything more than spitting or mist. These are exhaust relief holes and not the typical "pee-hole". Force doesn't have one..

Re: Sears Gamefisher overheating problems

I had the same problem with my 9.9 gamefisher this weekend- It ran at a high idle and it started steaming and overheating when underway, then the engine just quit. I am not getting any flow out of the rear of the engine like I was. I am planning on replacing the waterpump and also the piece that "we" believe is the thermostat, but I would just like a confimation on that. I was also wondering if anyone knew where the best place to order parts for this engine would be?

If you go through the time and trouble of checking the impeller REPLACE IT!! Even if you recently replaced it.It may look fine but may have taken a set and wont push as much water at high rpms.It would not hurt to flush the motor with salt away either. It may clean up the passages a little more. Also look in to changing the thermostat.Charlie

Re: Sears Gamefisher overheating problems

I just experienced the same problem. The engine ran fine for the last three seasons and just last week the problem happened. I removed the thermostat and ran the engine thinking the thermostat was sticking with similar overheating results . Ordered a replacement water pump kit from sears and replaced it last night (pretty easy) Hope it solves the problem
