Sears makes many points with me!!

Just saw a story on the NBC Evening News about how Sears treats its employees on active duty and deployed.

What a great program!!

Pays them the difference between their military pay and their Sears pay.

Continues all employee benefits, including seniority, bonuses and health insurance.

Welcomes them back to the jobs they left.

I will drive a few (50) extra miles to shop at Sears this season.

I would hope they do that.

Welcoming service people back to their job is the law. Sears has just taken advantage of advertising what they are required to do and are happy about it.

When I was a soldier..... Sears was always a good place to shop. Regardless of where you moved your family ....Sears was there

Great news. I stopped into Sears today to pick up a fridge water filter. Great service, great folks.

I'm a Craftsman guy, all the way. Always have been.

Sears used to be a great store at one time my water heater went i called them 3 hours latter i had one installed.

My alarm was done by sears.

And the tools are the only thing that keep me coming back.

No auto stuff to speak of and they used to carry everything.

They do have parts though for everything they sell, but you have to order them from colorado.

Oh well if the price is close i'll buy the sears item such as a power washer.

See they drew back a customer by doing what they are supposed to do but getting it out that they are doing it.

It's really shameful we celebrate now what used to be the norm, the right thing to do, the expected, because it has become so unique. I worked for a 1.5 billion dollar corporation years ago, ignored those called up for Desert Storm, and didn't even pay during jury duty. Said goodbye to corporate America and hello again to my Uncle Sam. Cash poorer but richer for it.

My next door neighbor works for
sears. when he had a stroke 2 years ago he was in a nursing home for months. Then at home for 5 more. When he tought he could work again they put him back in his position. Great store

There are always exceptions. You are fortunate. You probably experience little turnover there and many retirement parties. Good for you!

i work for a small computer and alarm company in a small town. we have great people there. unfortunetly, my boss has this everybody is replaceable attitude. it's nice to see larger companies doing great things for people, especially in these tough times, and especially for the men and women who selfishly put their lives on the line so others can enjoy freedom.

... yup Sears does rock. Did x-mas shopping there. You can make a donation in various amounts at time of check out. Proceeds go to troops families for items on a wish list while the head of household serves. Called "Heroes at Home program"

And, the washing machine my Mom washed my Greasey clothes in,....
Came from the Sears & Roebuck down in Bangor Me....
My own wrenches are 5 to 1 Craftsmans....

It's Good to know I'm supporting a worthy retailer.....

Are you saying they are required to pay difference, continue all benefits including seniority, bonuses and insurance coverage? That runs Sears about $10million a year. I don't think so. I agree that they are required to "rehire", but that is a far cry from continued employment, which is essentially what Sears does.

to be honest, i don't know if the rehire, into the present position, is in effect anymore. if so, don't know many companies that do it.

The re-employment is Federal Law ifcertain factors are met and the returning servicemember returns w/o loss of seniority.

When the service member is called to duty he/she gets all the benefits from the Gov't including health and life insurance. If deployed to a "hostile fire area"

I am saying the military does a great job with pay, allowances and tax incentives. The companies that make up the "gap" in pay are to be applauded and I bet they spend more for their exec's then the lower eschelon worker.

My office is right next door to a marine and navy reserve base, so I get to run all the guys and gals through before they leave for active duty. I also see the full time actives that run the base. The one thing that burns my butt more than anything are the guys angd gals who have families, will be gone for 12-18 months at a time while activated.......and now have to make arrangements to pay their bills from overseas or dump the responsibility on their spouses. The major thing I see are mortgages. Why can't the gov't give these fine young men and women a deferment for the length of their deployment so that they have one less thing to worry about? I am sure their spouses would love to have the extra money to help while they are gone. Just my 2 Cents, and I applaude Sears for going above what the gov't says they have to do. Nice to see a company do the right thing....hopefully it comes back to them in return.

It speaks volumes of a company's dedication to to it's employees, community, and country. When it continues to budget that amount of money to non mandated compensatory cost. Especially when the corporation is struggling (as Sears has been) to remain solvent. My hat's off to their BOD.

All of these things should NOT be a surprise to service people. There are protections and programs in place to accomodate these hardships.
