still working on a 63 18 hp evinrude. how the heck do i get the o-ring (or bushing) for shift rod out? looks like it would be easier to replace the o-ring with the bushing out. thanks

You need a tapered punch to get the bushing out, then the o-ring just drops out. You can make a punch quite easily, from a length of rod the diameter of which is bigger than the hole in the bushing, but small enough that it'll fit through the hole underneath the bushing. Taper the end of the rod so that it's smaller than the hole in the bushing.
Insert the punch from underneath and give it a sharp blow with a hammer, the bushing should come out quite easily. I took the precaution of making my punch from aluminium, which is softer than the bush to avoid damaging it.
You can use the same punch to refit the bushing from the top.

thanks petrol. i was trying to knock it out with a regular tapered punch by hittin what i thought was the side. i thought i was hitting the bushing however on closer inspection i was actually hitting the cast of the l/u housing. i'll have to look a little closer. the area from below is pretty small.

Check out this discussion about the bushing:
Iboats thread, click here.

There's a bunch of ways suggested there to remove it. On some housings they seem to get really stuck - the punch I made was of steel, and it's mushroomed from beating on it.

the tap suggestion seems the easiest. i assume i will be able to reuse the bushing even after i have tapped it???

Yeah, just don't tap it all the way. Going half way will leave plenty on it to guide the shift rod. The bushing is about .350" deep, so that's about 3 or 4 full turns of the tap you want to go. If it's stuck bad you'll have to tap it further so you don't strip your threads.

On some gearcases it's pretty much impossible to get at the bushing with a tap.

Good luck!
