Once I get the motor off the boat what is the proper way to store it until someone purchases it?

If in good running condition, that motor is worth more than you think.
I would save it for future use. You can always sell it in a few years if you don't use it.
Good used motors are getting hard to find, and the cost of a new one is keeping the price of used motors high.

Motor may bring $1500-2300.

Empty the carbs, fog the cylinders, and put it in the corner of the garage.

The motor has run very well for me. I would keep it but need to sell it to put that money towards another boat or I would seriously consider keeping it. It also has a mercury tempest plus prop on it which is not cheap either

i say keep the motor, especially if you decide to buy a center console

it may be worth it in the long run

I really would keep the motor but being on a high school kid budget I need to sell it to get money together for my next boat.

Glad to hear you are moving on. Your next boat will be bigger and probably have a motor so~~ I agree with sell it. Sell it separately then take the hull to the landfill. Sell the trailer. Sell the motor while still on the boat. A buyer can see it run and may want the controls as well.

I planned to leave it on the boat until someone buys it so I could run it and show the compression numbers on it but if I do take it off I will take pictures of the compression of each cylinder before I do. I am not in a super big hurry to get another boat as I have a 77 14 ft side console with a 78 mercury 40 I can use in smaller waters until I get something bigger.

I also just remembered my friends dad needing a motor for his deck boat and I think he was looking for a 150 and then I know it would be going to a good home and I will more than likely be on the boat with that it would be on from time to time

Be careful selling stuff to friends, your heart is in the right spot, but if it blows up on him after spending a good chunk of cash, it could make him sour. I try to not sell anything mechanical and used to friends. You just never know when a motor could let loose. It is after all buyer beware, but some folks will still get really bent if it isn't perfect. Worth thinking about. Good luck parting her out, you should yield more $$ doing so.
And for the record the motor controls almost always go with the motor, unless the buyer already has them. They are worth some good $$ too.

Mariner magnum III value

I have a 1992 mariner magnum III 150 hp which is just the merc xr6. The boat it is on has a rotten transom and I'm going to part it out and was curious as to the value of the motor so I can know about what to ask for it. Thanks in advance

Would it be worth my time to go through the boat and remove all of the aerator ad bilge pumps and things like that?

they're not worth much to sell but IF you need them in the future the sure, it's worth it

I'll probably remove what is easily accessible just I case I do need it in the future

well if you completely strip it of everything then your removing things that could mean it wont be much to attract someone as a project. if all you are offering them is an empty shell that needs EVERYTHING plus major repairs then you may be stuck with it and have to pay to dispose of it. I suggest you sell it like it is and I wouldn't strip it down to nothing unless you are junking it.

for the $100 it costs for new steering its worth buying a new steering kit if you need to replace it on your next boat. I look at it like this, things like steering will need to fit the boat you want to use it on so you may not be able to use it on your next boat and not having it still on the boat could be the final straw that makes the guy decide not to take it off of your hands.

knick knacks like bilge pumps and things, I consider as critical safety equipt and are cheap enough to never bother with using anything that is used that most likely will fail on you when you need them.

remember you need it to have enough potential to tempt someone into taking it off of your hands so leave a little meat on the bones for the next guy to make it worth his time for taking it on and all the money he will have to spend on it.

if there is anything like large big ticket items such as jack plates or electronics (fish finders and transducers) or something expensive like power poles then take those but for the rest of the normal routine small item stuff I would leave on it because in most cases it wont have much life left anyway
