Sure, and on his plaque in cooperstown, it should say that he bet on baseball and disgraced himself. :)

I've posted this before, but I went to the Hall 1 1/2 yrs ago and Pete's memorabilia is everwhere. He's there whether you like it or not. I believe he should be there. As far as coaching goes, I don't think he was that good of a coach anyway. GAMBLING!!! C'mon, there's Felons in the Hall, and Acoholics who stole livers from deserving people.

YES! You can't argue his stats. His gambling had nothing to do with the great player that he was.

And, I totally agree with guageguy that a reference about his gambling should appear on his plaque.

If truth be known, I would wager a guess that Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Gabby Hartnett, and many more players from long ago also gambled, they just didn't get caught.

Besides, hubby has a Pete Rose signed baseball bat and ball and other memorbilia we purchased just in case several years ago knowing that one day he would get into the HOF.

Kinda funny isn't it, if you bet on baseball you are "banned for life". Betting is legal. If you abuse cocaine, we'll put you into rehab.

I believe that getting into the Hall of Fame should, (and is), based on what was done on the field. Pete was obviously a great player, who deserves to be there based on his play.

If the Hall of Fame was based on someones actions off the field, then he should not be there. But I don't think its based on that.

The only problem I have is, I believe the only reason he came clean is because he wants to be in the Hall, not because he thought it was wrong to bet on baseball, (even his own team), while managing.

There is only one rule, NO GAMBLING. Maybe he is an idiot and didn't understand that. The Idiots hall of Fame. Maybe he didn't understand the history of the Chicago Black Sox that spauned this rule. The historical moron Hall of Fame. Maybe he is a liar, no check that he is a liar. The Liars Hall of Fame.

The man is a disgrace. But he should be in the hall of fame but should be inducted with Darryl Strawberry and Doc Gooden as being more famous for their distraction to the sport than the contributions. Yeah, he is famous but for what?

I say induct him... the worst thing you can do to his ego is to put him in the HOF because he then goes from being the most talked about to just another "looser" in the HOF. His stats are certainly worthy for him to be inducted, but his personality is... lacking, to put it generously. History will get it right with regard to Pete Rose.

Otherwise, keep him out of baseball. If they let him in to manage, no one is ever going to believe whether or not he is playing straight at any given moment.

My favorite quote of his last week when asked why, after 14 years, he is finally admitting to betting on baseball: "Because I'm a stand up guy."

:D

I'm with POINTER94 - You can't undermine the integrity of the game by betting on the game while you are involved in the game.

If they let him in, it will undermine the deterrent affect of the rule.

Also, how do you reward a guy who lies for 14-years, attacks and tries to destroy the witnesses against him, and only comes clean to sell books?

He has not earned nor does he deserve any sympathy at all. IMHO, he is not sorry he did it, he is just sorry he got caught.

Nope. You better not bring the subject up to my 15-year old. He has even higher standards than I for the Hall of Fame.

Jinx

LF - He wants to be reinstated - he came right out and said so on O'Reilly the other night. There is a rule on the books that says no person on the banned list can be inducted in the Hall of Fame.

No matter how good a player he was, he broke the cardinal rule of the game and wasn't even the least bit sorry for 14-years. He attacked people who said he was a liar and he has yet to apologize to them. How do you reward that behavior simply becuase he was a great player.

The difference between Rose and others is Rose hurt the integrity of the game. Example, how do you know, as a manager, Rose did not do things simply because he had a wager on the outcome? Once people think the game is not on the level, that is the end of the game.

LF I think you hit the nail on the head. He has been banned from baseball. How can one be honored in something one has been banned from. Once you are banned, you do not exist in that fraternity.

It would be like a priest being given the highest honor the church can bestow after he has been excommunicated for sexual abuse. It just doesn't make sense..

My feeling is baseball always has been and still is, corrupt. Maybe not to the same degree as boxing, but nonetheless corrupt. One guy who got caught gambling is not going to change that. Many before him did far worse and are in the HOF, he should be too.

Re: should pete rose make it into

As far as I know, there are no people in the HOF who did anything against the integrity of the game. For example, Shoeless Joe Jackson is not in the HOF. Being a drunkard, awful father, faithless spouse, etc, do not affect the integrity of the game.

If Rose isn't kept out, who will ever be kept out? If you keep nobody out, what is the value of being in?

Re: should pete rose make it into

Is the HOF for how someone lived their personal life, or how they played? Pete would go to the HOF as a player, not as a manager. I believe the betting was during his managing days, not his playing days. He should be there for what was done on the field....period.

If he does not go to the HOF as a player because of what he did in his personal life AFTER his playing days, then they should open up an investigation into every player inducted into the HOF. Odds are, there are some in the HOF now, that based on their personal life, shouldn't be there.

Should L.T. be in the football HOF after some of the things he admitted to doing?

The HOF is for accomplishments on the field. If that changes, then Pete should not be there, until then, he should.

(I am not a Pete supporter either. I personally think hes an idiot).
