single lever remote problem

Working on an '89 Evinrude 48 special and someone has cut the wire that runs to the front of the control box. It is a plug with three holes that goes into the front of the control box. Where do these get reconnected to in the wiring harness. Also are they for the overheat horn and electric primer or what are they for. Can't find a wiring diagram anywhere. Thanks again for the help.

I believe one pin in the tach (gray wire), one is a switched power (purple wire). Not sure on the other.

Re: single lever remote problem

They have some other wires spliced on it and taped. I'll undo it and see what color wire is underneath. I'm betting the third wire is tan for the overheat alarm. Thanks

Sounds like the tach harness. Black= ground, Purple= power (ignition), Grey= send
My limited experience with the older remotes, at least that vintage, is that the overheat buzzer is in the remote box and part of the red plug wiring harness wired through the ignition switch.

That three pin connector is located directly beneath the ignition key. That is indeed the tach connector and includes the tach signal, +12 volts and ground. An aftermarket or factory cable plugs into that connector and to the back of the tach. I always make mine when necessary. Radio Shack is your friend for terminals.

midsize and silvertip you are probably right. When it gets above 30 degrees I will take off the extension cord wire that they spliced to it with about a 1/2 roll of electrical tape and let you know. Silvertip, actually the key is toward the stern and this connector comes in from the front side of the control box.

I had that same remote, the pigtail connector drops out of the box with a shield over the male pins. This is definitely a tach wiring harness.

So fun messing with other people's "rigging!" You guys should have seen the battery cable on my new (to me) boat. This is a scooter with no sides, mind you, and the guy had spliced the cable in an above deck conduit and taped it all up with duct tape. Nice and wet when I tore into to figure out what he had done. Looked like a surefire way for me to be stuck somewhere with a grounded out electrical system. Needless to say, it's a continuous run from engine to battery now!

Re: single lever remote problem

You are exactly right-- tach harness. This thing is on a pontoon boat that I have completely stripped down to the deck. I have never seen so many wires run from front to middle to back and then to the bimini top. I guess they never heard of two wires from the battery to buss bars inside the console. Thanks for the help guys.
