Long post, sorry.

What a day, took the boat out (first time this year) and it rained like I was Noah (my three kids played the part of "animals" quite well).

Tried worms, powerbait, casting, trolling... no fish.

Sun came out (finally) and it was a wonderful 3 hours on the lake, but clouds brewing and time to get in. This guy (insert: moron) had his minivan in 2 lanes trying to get in the water. He didn't use the prep area to get ready though, he parked on the ramp (2 lanes) and spent 10 minutes getting ready. Then spent another 10 trying to back up. Then got the boat off and tied it to the dock right at the ramp in one of the lanes. Then stayed tied there for 20 minutes.

So.... my turn!

Get jeep backed up just right (first try), get wife in jeep to pull me out, untie boat from FAR side of the dock (where normal people tie off), brought her around and glided that last 10 feet without power to avoid ramp damage, etc. IT WENT PERFECT! Bend over the bow, hooked up, ratcheted it up that last 5 inches or so, waved my sweetie to pull forward and..... then it happened. I forgot to tilt up the drive. Only drug it 12"-18" (inches) but still

Boat transom wasn't tied down, only the bow, I had sweetie pull forward while I tilted it up (power tilt) and it came up without a problem.

Other then a slightly flat skeg below the prop, what damage could occur?

.... and THEN.... on the way home the storm deposited lots of rain in the washes that cross the road. Those were no problem, but one wash was dry but had some sand in it.... just before I hit it at 50 mph I saw the 5" tall sandbar that it left behind. EVERYTHING left the ground but came back down okay. The bow of the boat is not resting against the bowstop, but next to it. The bowstop rubber "V" is bent over and protecting the gelcoat but still, it isn't in the right place. How in the heck to fix that when I am 2 hours from any water?

For those that read my posts, you may remember a post concerning "listing while underway", well it was doing it again and I suspected the dol-phin, but it went away (almost) when I trimmed out the drive while on plane.

First problem: 2 hours from water? Man you got to move! Sorry, couldn't resist.

That was a neat trick, taking the whole rig airborne. Maybe you can show me how that's done sometime. :)

I've jacked up the bow of my boat for trailer maintenance by putting my car jack up on cinder blocks & using lumber to support the boat. Hook it up to the jeep first, though, to make sure it won't roll away.

Alternatively you could rig up a support frame on the ground then crank the trailer's jack stand down. Course you'd want to secure the trailer first.

good luck!

Possible but no likly you dinged the prop. No real harm done except to your pride. I draged my skeg 30 feet to clear the ramp and post is on the stupid human tricks post as to why! :D

I'm sure there is a better way that I didn't figure out... here is what I did.Backed trailer close to tree, hooked tiedown ratchet to tree, and atatched to ski eye, and tightened. loosened up winch strap enough to allow boat to move back 6 inches, and pulled trailer ahead 6 inches...slooooooowly.undid tie down and cranked boat back up where it belongs. I sure there are other ways, have someone keep an eye on boat while moving.

Jim

You should have transom straps and a bow strap plus a safety chain. Not the winch strap, a bow strap from the bow eye to the trailer frame.

These straps will keep the boat and trailer together.

lol jtexas... I just need to move.

Good ideas, will try it.

I have transom straps, but not a safety chain or bow strap other than the winch strap.

When I say everything left the ground, I mean the jeep, the trailer, and the boat :

I will check for these additional safety devices on iboats ,etc.

If the winch post on the trailer is bolted on, loosen bolts slide post back and move to the original position, at the same time you can add a safety chain.... Sounds like a few of my boating days.

I know the feeling. Your driving along and suddenly you see a hole in the road big enough to swallow a volkswagen and oh sh_t its too late. Well your still on the road and you look in the mirror and hope everything is still where it should be. Got away with it this time. Don't rely on the winch strap for anything other than winching the boat onto the trailer. Get a safety strap or chain to hold the bow down to the trailer. My launch ramp is 2 minutes from my driveway....and its free. I love it !!!! Sorry azfyrfytr63 I couldn't resist. :D :D :D
Does your trailer have keel rollers and if so is the boat off the rollers as well ? May need to block the boat up and shift the trailer if thats the case. Good luck.

Re: skeg drag on ramp

Great story! Get a bow strap like the one illustrated above, as well as a safety chain. Plan for the worst

RE: the ding on your skeg. You should be able to tell visually if the prop is damaged or if the skeg is bent. You want to get the prop fixed or replaced if bent. If the skeg is bent, you can usually get it straightened or do it yourself. If it's just scraped or maybe even chipped a "little", what I'd do is file smooth, prime and paint to hide the damage. I always try to hide the damage I do! If it's chipped or otherwise damaged you can get a competent aluminum welding shop to repair it completely, or you can put a "skeg guard" on, essentially to replace the damaged part.

You can get a skeggard. Stainless steel cover. it will mount to any skeg (by make) with 3" or more remaining. BTW; You are not the first to forget to trim to trailer.

LOL... I feel better !

Not sitting on keel rollers, it sits on the beds. Trailer doesn't quite fit the boat, close but not exact.

No prop damage and skeg is only scaped on the bottom, not bent and such. Prime and paint sounds good.

Re: skeg drag on ramp

Dont think youre the only person to forget to tilt the outboard or drive. At some point we've all done it. Luckily the manufacturers allow for hitting things going forward. Pressure relief valve save a lot of hydraulic parts. No big deal.

However, when the drive gets left down and the guy -- for some unknown reason -- thinks backing up will help....

Now the drive / lower unit is jammed under the boat, the back of the boat is off the trailer and the wife walks away crying because the husband is yelling at her. But she just did what he told her to do in the first place yet its her fault.

My buddy and I watched that one day. We even offered to help but when we got yelled at....

Re: skeg drag on ramp

I hear ya (to all those who have forgotten to tilt on the ramp). I run an outboard jet which doesn't go below the bottom of the boat and therefore doesn't need to be tilted for trailering. I have run jets for many, many years. I go to visit my folks in the midwest and being the helpful son, offer to take their fishing boat around to the ramp and haul it out.(nice rig - simple Lund w/ center console and 40 hp OB, live boxes, pedestal seats, basic fishing machine). Pull it out without tilting DOH. Bent skeg, trashed prop. I'm happy to make them whole, but am leaving the next day and don't want to have them mess with it. Haul it to local boat shop where the guy knows how to straighten the skeg - wonderful, like new. Can't get the prop fixed for 10 days so I have to buy a new one and go ahead and get the old one repaired anyway. Everyone, even on a simple lake, should have a spare prop, no? Well they have one and have never used or needed one in 25 years! We've all BTDT.
